Life will be very different for a person who is going through a stroke recovery. The specifics will vary from person to person but there's likely to be some kind of disability. It's important to make sure that the home in which they live is tweaked a bit to allow them to get around and continue on to go about their lives in the easiest possible way.
It really isn't that difficult to make a few adjustments that can really make a huge difference to somebody who has just suffered from a stroke. For those who are in wheelchairs you can make it easier for them to move around by widening doorways and installing lever handles on each of the doors. It may be necessary to install a stair elevator if the person whom you are caring for will need to visit different levels of the home on a daily basis.
Wheelchair ramps should be installed outside the front door if there are steps leading up to it. This way you don't have to worry about lifting up the wheelchair to get into the door.
You should plan on removing all the furniture that you have that isn't really needed. This will just add clutter and make it more difficult for mobility. You'll want to be sure that the furniture will not be moved if it is leaned on and never move furniture around once the person you're caring for has gotten used to it being laid out in a certain way. They may forget or not realize that you have made the changes and this could result in injury.
It would be helpful to install automatic lights or night lights in the room of the stroke recovery patient. In case they do need to get up when it's dark, their room will be illuminated enough for them to be able to see and get around if they need to.
Any patient going through recovery following a stroke is probably going to be quite frustrated with their current circumstances. They will still want to be able to do everything for themselves even if they can't really do it. Do your best to remain patient with them and to keep encouraging them. The easier it is for them to continue on with their life as normal as possible the better they will feel. Making a few changes such as removing unwanted furniture, installing automatic lights and wheelchair ramps can really help if you are caring for somebody who has suffered a stroke.
