Stroke recovery depends on several different key factors, with quality of life being dependent on some of them.

The first 30 days post stroke are the most important for recovery and neuro regeneration. This is not to say that therapy is put off until the 30 days are up. Rather, with the doctor's input, rehabilitation will start as soon as the patient is able to. To use the cliche, there's a need for speed in order to regain as much function as possible.

Family plays a key role in recovery, more so than they think. Being supportive to the patient is the tip of the iceberg in terms of assistance. The patient may have lost certain functions and will need to learn how to obtain new ones to get around the loss. There's no need for the family to turn themselves into nursemaids. Chances are this will only serve to annoy the patient and keep them from progressing as rapidly as they could. Be patient, assist when necessary and step back to encourage him or her to accomplish something on their own.

The patient may have problems with speech, thought and coordination. Some are completely paralyzed on one side of their body. Being considerate of these issues without making a big deal of them is important for a caregiver. A majority of post-stroke patients will suffer from depression as a direct result of the event. It's better to downplay the disabilities than to be overly cautious around them. In other words, don't make a big deal over the fact that the patient can't do something. Find a way around it. Talk to them on their level. Help perform approved exercises with the affected limbs. Keeping a patient moving keeps them from dwelling for too long on their condition.

Physical therapy will be a large part of the recovery process. And sometimes the patient will need to be pushed past what they think is a breaking point. The caregiver may also have to perform the exercise at home with the patient. Always follow the therapist's orders, even if the patient is complaining. Regaining strength is one of the more important achievements of regaining function.

Above all else, treat a patient with dignity and respect. They have a long and difficult journey ahead of them. Be yourself and interact with them. Listen to what they have to say. If they've had enough for the day or want to be left alone then do as they ask. Last but not least, be kind.
