Unfortunately, strokes happen and the effects of one can be devastating, but do not lose hope because there is a good chance that a victim can experience stroke recovery. A stroke can affect emotions, perceptions, the way one relates to his or her body, hearing and speech, thought processes, and it can affect how one eats. If you know someone who has suffered a stroke, you can be a tool in their lives to help them get on the road to stroke recovery.

If a stroke patient is coming to live with you in your own home, your home may need to go through some changes. Above all, a home must be safe. The safer your home is the less work for you. You can talk to a medical professional or someone you know who can help you make the necessary changes. Be prepared to make some sizable changes; your furniture may be all wrong. the stroke patient may not be able to reach many things that were easily accessible before, doorways may need to be widened to allow a wheel chair to fit through, doorknobs will need to be changed, and the outside of the house will need a handicapped ramp, if there is not one at the present time. If any other changes need to be made, you and the patient will soon realize it.

Once you are both nestled within the home, you will need to be very watchful. You should be aware of which medications the patient is on and how much, how often, they need each. Also, familiarize yourself with possible side effects so you will be prepared if something unusual occurs. Stroke recovery is a process that happens over 3 to 4 months and can go on for a year or 2. Be careful to watch for signs that the patient needs physical therapy. Because you do not want to miss anything, if you are unsure of your ability to give the best care, seek medical advice when necessary. Watch for positive or negative changes, do not let a fall go unnoticed, and pay close attention to the attitude and habits of the patient.

Probably the best advice for a caregiver who is ministering to a loved one during stroke recovery is to spoil yourself now and then. Watch yourself almost as closely as you watch the patient and take time out as needed.
