Children who suffer stroke entail special care as compared to their adult counterparts. Although medications and treatments applied to adult stroke patients show considerably effective with children, special care should still be administered especially since the actual efficacy and dosage of medications, for example, still require clinical trials in terms of long-term safety.

A report released by Neurology.Com indicate that stroke indicators for children are so multifaceted that its hard to prescribe a standard process of treatment. According to the report, "children were less likely than young adult stroke patients to have identifiable risk factors and more often fall victim to infectious or inflammatory disorders".

The report also adds that no randomized treatment trial has been conducted in children with stroke. To avoid children with stroke from suffering further complications such as infectious or inflammatory disorders than what deficit they already have, it is a must then that special care be given them by caregivers and family members.

Stroke treatment for children vary depending on the needs of the child. This may include brain scans, blood tests, echocardiograms, and blood thinners. Rehabilitation include improving abilities affected by stroke, finding ways of adapting to change, developing skills in daily activities, and emotional, social, and practical support.

Healthcare for children stroke victims involve collaboration with a pediatric neurologist on the onset and with the community child health services to coordinate the child's needs for health, education, and social services.

Caregivers and family members should ensure the patient is always hygienic to avoid infections together with nutritious food and beverages. Surrounding the child with cheerful family friends and family is insurmountable to help recover insecurities brought by stroke.

On top of that, caregivers and family members should ensure the patient gets more rest and sleep than the usual 8 hours a day. Sleep has been shown to speedup recovery of mobility and cognitive function for stroke patients as it promotes the development of new cells in the brain. The chance of this happening in children is more likely as they are young and are in the stage of growth and development.

This is probably the reason why stroke rehabilitation in children as compared to adults is the fact that more children recover and move on with their lives than adults who end up in nursing homes, which is a big consolation considering the expense for pediatric cerebrovascular treatment (children 20 years below) already registers an annual $42M in the United States alone.

Children who suffer stroke entail special care not only from family members and caregivers but from all facets of society to avoid repeated stroke and ensure full recovery of the child.
