Being physically active is vital as it lessens the probability of incurring health troubles. People who indulge in physical activity are not prone to falling prey to illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes, and they are more likely to live a longer, healthier life.

Physically fit people have a zest for - and also an optimistic and confident approach towards - life, which often helps them in their daily life. For such people, it is easier to do their daily tasks and also with high efficiency.

The regular routine for exercise comprises of fitness techniques to make improvements in cardio vascular effectiveness, to develop immunity to diseases and establish a muscular strength of the body. Exercise also helps in making the joints elastic, particularly the back bone and knee joints, which have to be cared for properly in order to be fit in the older ages.

In fact, stretching on a daily basis alone is a great exercise. Making it a component of your fitness routine has several advantages, which can be felt while exercising. The importance of stretching as a pre-exercise routine or as a stand-alone activity can be understood only when we understand the body tissues' functions and requirements.

Effects of stretching the body

Muscles attain their nutrients through the body's vascular system, but there exists no such dynamic system for cartilage tissues. As the cartilage tissues cover the bones' ends in body joints, they are of paramount importance and need their own replenishment for remaining fit and healthy. Basically, cartilage are fed by the particulates of the joints' fluids, called the 'Synovial Fluid'. Stretching essentially optimises the supply of fluid to the cartilage. Regular stretching of the body results in the increased nutrition of cartilage and maintains the continuous loosening of tissues connecting the joints. When you perform stretching exercises, be sure to move both in the inward as well as outward directions, in an optimised manner.

There are some tips to be remembered, while doing stretching exercises:

* Before initiating any exercises, warming up your body is very important. This stimulates the transfer of blood (and the nutrients in it) to the body's joints and muscles, leading to a warming up of the muscles and lubrication of joints.
* Never over-exert your body. Damage and tear of muscles can be painful and sometimes take a long time to heal, so you are better off doing what you are comfortable with.
* Leaping and bouncing while stretching can prove to be a bad idea. For one, it is ineffective and other than that, it can injure you.
* If you have torn or injured muscles, it is highly advisable to consult a doctor before starting any kind of stretching or exercise regime.
* The optimum time to hold a stretch is 20-30 seconds. Less can be ineffective, while more can be harmful to the muscles.
* Relaxation of the body after a stretching routine can be quite beneficial. It can help to prevent muscle injury and soreness as a result of your workout.

Stretching can thus be said to be an easy form of exercise that almost anybody, irrespective of their age and body fitness levels, can take up. Apart from the physical benefits, its great advantage is the rejuvenation that it provides to the mind.
