Many people nowadays often complain about various illnesses and other body ailments. The main reason for this is the progressive reduction in the quality of fitness over the years. People no longer find time to care about their health, as the competition in their sphere of work has intensified, making them unfit and also causing many subtle illnesses, which will come to haunt them in their old age. The endurance level of people has dropped drastically and they become victims of disease even in their 30's or 40's. For instance, the growing number of women and even men becoming victims of osteoporosis is proof of this.

It is high time that people realise the importance of fitness and start taking steps to improve it. One of the important factors that decides a person's fitness is their lifestyle. People who take drugs, smoke, and drink, will remain perpetually unfit and are more vulnerable to harmful diseases. Resting the body is as important as - or even more important than - exercising, and following the proverb "early to bed early to rise" could be useful. Nutrition is another thing that most people do not take proper care with. Eating lots is not important, and could be harmful if you eat a lot of junk food; this means avoiding all hot chips, takeaway food, and other things. It is good to have food like spinach, eggs, salmon, cottage cheese and the like.

Eating about four to five small meals in a day could be good, and it is essential to drink a lot of water. With rising temperatures everywhere, your body is bound to dehydrate quickly and it is necessary to supplement the water lost through regular intake. Also, loss of water can lead to loss of muscle tissue, which could be harmful. Regular exercising is another necessity to keep you fit. Exercising is not only done to increase the size of your muscles and to make you look toned, but also has other benefits like increasing the lung's capacity to provide oxygen to the blood, increasing the ability of the heart to pump large quantities of blood, and also increasing the capability of muscles to use oxygen. Another advantage of proper exercising is increased blood circulation to the brain, thereby increasing the thinking capacity of people.

Exercising is not a thing of the young alone, and it is perhaps equally (or even more) important when you grow older. Though older people may have a fear of getting hurt while exercising, it is essential to suppress these fears and try and work out daily. It is not necessary to do heavy exercises and things like aerobics, swimming and stretching alone will suffice. These exercises work all your muscles and also increase your body's oxygen intake. Older people often complain of pain in their joints, and stretching can increase the flexibility of the joints and also improve posture. Strength training is also important to improve the strength of your bones and it is essential to make it a part of your exercise routine.
