There are many reasons to consider purchasing a gym membership, not the least of which being to get into shape. But most people think they can get physically fit at home, without the need for a gym membership. With an obesity rate of 23%, though, it is a good idea to consider joining a gym to lose weight. Here are 8 benefits of getting a gym membership versus trying to workout from home.

1. At a gym you will have the opportunity to work in a group environment. This is great for motivation, as it is a proven fact that exercising with a partner or in a group causes people to exert more effort.

2. With a gym membership, you can get help from personal trainers on difficult fitness techniques. If you work out from home, you have a very limited set of exercises that can be done, and if you don't know how to exercise a certain muscle, you're stuck. A gym has the staff that is willing to help you achieve your fitness goals.

3. Together, your fellow gym mates and personal trainers will guarantee that you maintain the motivation necessary to achieve your goals. As mentioned before, it is a lot easier to stay motivated if you are working out with someone else.

4. If you work out a gym, you can do group activities that are not possible if you exercise alone. For example, you can play basketball or football, or any other team sport. By exercising alone, you limit the number of activities you can do.

5. Some gyms offer the services of a nutritionist, which will maximise your fitness goals. What good is doing exercise if your diet is awful?

6. Some gyms will track your achievements for you, such as weight loss, endurance, and strength. Being able to see the results of your exercise is another great motivator to keep you going.

7. Having a gym membership gives you a place to go to exercise, which can be the deciding factor in whether you exercise or not. If you work out at home, but you decide you don't want to, you'll have all sorts of things that will prevent you from exercising (chores, your bed, the TV, etc.) On the other hand, with a gym membership, you have a place to go to exercise. If you show up at the gym but don't feel like exercising, you're not going to have all of the distractions that will keep you from exercising.

8. A gym membership can be cheaper than quality exercise equipment. Many gyms run specials if you sign up for them long-term, giving you access to their equipment and facilities. On the other hand, a home-gym requires a large investment up front and then you are responsible for its maintenance.

A gym membership isn't for everybody, but they are great way to get in shape, and stay in shape. If you want to get physically fit, you should give strong consideration to joining a gym versus trying to go it alone.
