Well into the UK's summer, it's the time of the year when people start to pack up their suitcases, buy the suntan lotion and beach towels and jump on an aeroplane for a week or two to get some guaranteed sun.

If you're holiday is looming and you want to lose a few extra pounds, check out these 3 steps that will help anyone lose weight in a matter of weeks.

1. Ditch the carbs - a balanced diet is a must for any long term weight loss, as by cutting out one food type completely, you may lose weight quickly, but as soon as you starting eating that food group once again, you'll begin to start putting the pounds back on.

However, there is a lot of benefit in taking a temporary break from the amount of carbohydrates that you consume.

The food type that gives you energy but which is also used by your body to store fats, it's important that you don't cut out carbohydrates completely, but just cut them right down - maybe only having them once a day (such as for cereal for breakfast, sandwich at lunch or rice or potatoes for dinner).

2. Take up walking - whenever someone thinks about heading to one of the many gyms in London to aid with their weight loss, they can break out in a sweat at just the thought of having to run on a treadmill. Whilst there is always the option to walk, you sweat more and are out of breath more when you run, so that's obviously better for you, right?

Wrong - tests have proved (as shown in various medical and health resources, including About.com's Walking section) that whilst running does burn more calories, the difference between running and walking in terms of calorie count is minimal at best.

Plus, walking is a lot easier to carry out, as most people can fit in 30 minutes of walking each day, whether that's a 15 minute stroll on their lunch and then a 7.5 minute walk to and from the car park on a morning and night or simply one 30 minute walk after finishing work.

3. Join a gym - the gyms in London, just like anywhere else in the country, seem to be full of people who look like they spend hours each day working out. A daunting sight for anyone who is just getting into losing weight, the thought of working out alongside these super-fit individuals can put anyone off joining.

However, when you take a closer look, it's apparent that there are often just as many people who are in the same boat as you - and chances are, these seemingly super-fit people were once in that boat, too.

Once this is realised, these people became role models that you can aspire to, rather than people you envy and in addition to this, gyms always have personal trainers at hand, who are great at keeping you motivated and helping you carry out the most suitable exercise for you.
