5 Ways To Maintain A Healthy Diet This Summer

Aside from Christmas, many consider summer to be one of the most difficult times to lose weight. Barbecues are taking place on a regular basis, you're likely to go the seaside to get fish and chips and an ice cream and then there's the whole possibility of going on holiday and eating more food in one week than you would in two at home.

Starting with ensuring you continue your gym membership, whether you go to the gym in Manchester 5 days a week or one in Cornwall only once, these 5 tips should all help to make sure you maintain a healthy diet this summer.

1. Drink over 8 glasses of water a day - the recommended intake for water each day is 8 glasses, which is the equivalent to a 2 litre bottle and which should be drunk each day of the year.

In the summer months, however, as your body loses more water because you tend to sweat more due to the heat, it's important that you re-hydrate your body with not only the recommended 8 glasses of water each day, but at least an additional 2, depending on how hot it is.

2. Don't shy away from the barbecue - when many people who are looking to lose weight think of barbecues, they instantly think that they have to avoid them because of all of the fat which is dripping out of the burgers and sausages when they're cooking.

But that's just it - the fat is dripping out of the burgers and sausages, making barbecues a particularly healthy way to cook.

Granted, the quality of the meat also has a large impact on how healthy it is, but for the actual style of cooking, barbecuing is one of the healthiest.

3. Ditch the beer, but not the alcohol - beer is one of the most calorie-intense alcoholic drinks, which means that you should give it up (or limit your intake considerably) whilst you're looking to lose weight.

There's no need to give up alcohol completely, though. If you like red wine, then a glass or two is likely to do your body more good than harm, but if not, stick to a clear spirit with a diet mixer, such as a gin and diet tonic, as drinks of this style only carry a small amount of calories.

4. Lose the salad dressing - it may make the salad taste wonderful, but shop bought salad dressings - even the reduced fat varieties - are still not often particularly healthy.

Consider making your own dressing if you really want something to drizzle over your salad - a bit of extra virgin olive oil mixed with balsamic vinegar tastes a lot better than you may think.

5. Go pescetarian - a term that refers to a person who lives a vegetarian diet with the exception being that they eat seafood, leading a pescetarian diet is very healthy way to live, as you're removing all of the fats that come with meat products, but keeping your protein levels high with the fish.
