Unless you've been stuck in a cave for the past few months, you'll have seen the many advertisements on TV and in newspapers and magazines for various weight loss groups.

Requiring for you to pay an initial fee, followed by a weekly membership fee, these weight loss groups provide a diet programme that all of their members abide by, with the guarantee that as long as you stick to it, you'll lose weight.

Now if you're overweight and trying to slim down, it can be tempting to sign up to one of these groups. There full of people of all ages - and of both sexes - and some of them have been going for decades, so there's no doubting that they work.

The problem is, aside from the fact that you are likely to spend well over 500 pound a year going to them, for most people looking to lose weight they aren't really necessary, assuming that you're motivated enough to lose weight without needing to rely on being told exactly what to do from others.

For example, any weight loss programme is made up of the same principles. With a reduction in carbohydrates, it's important that you don't mix your protein and carbs together in too great of a quantity and portion control in general plays a large part. Furthermore, there is a restriction on how much 'luxury' food you can have, such as alcohol, chocolate and sweets.

With this being the basis for any weight loss programme, along with the fact that it needs to be supported by regular exercise, once you know and understand this, it becomes really clear just how simple it is to create your own programme.

For instance, a basic self-made programme may be to stop eating sugary cereals for breakfast, along with a cup of coffee and instead have two pieces of wholegrain toast with a glass of fresh orange.

A normal lunch of chicken salad with mayonnaise sandwiches could be replaced with a grilled chicken salad and dinner could be a whole host of meals, from fresh baked fish with herbs, a small selection of potatoes and two types of vegetables or a jacket potato with beans and some fresh vegetables.

Snacking on fruit or vegetables such as carrots and cucumbers throughout the day and ditching the tea or coffee for water, in a matter of minutes you create your very own diet.

It's imperative to remember that exercise plays an important role in any type of weight loss and therefore consider signing up to a health club or gym, with not only gyms in London and other big cities suitable, but many smaller gyms in towns and villages being just as suitable, too.

There is no doubt that joining an organised weight loss programme is a great way to lose weight for some people, particularly those who struggle to get motivated on their own. However, it is obvious that with just a small amount of research and using the principles explained here, you can create your own diet programme that won't cost you a penny.
