Irrelevant of whether you're a health fanatic who visits the gym every day or you break out in a sweat at the sheer thought of running a treadmill, exercise is good for you - and everybody knows that. But in what ways is it measurably good for you? That is the question most people fail to answer, which keeps them from being in the best shape that they possibly can and these 7 reasons explain just why you need to get off the couch and head to the gym.

1. Exercise improves your mood. It's a proven fact that physical activity stimulates that brain, leaving you happier and more relaxed than when you started. You'll also look and feel better, which is great for self-esteem.

2. Exercise can counter chronic diseases such as heart disease and osteoporosis. Additionally, regular physical activity can help manage high blood pressure, and boosts HDL cholesterol, while decreasing triglycerides. This prevents the build-up of plaque in your arteries. On top of that, exercise can help you prevent type 2 diabetes and even certain types of cancer!

3. This one is obvious, but exercise helps you manage your weight. Exercising burns calories. The more intense the exercise, the more calories you burn. Don't have time to exercise? Take simple steps to get physical activity, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walk during your lunch break, and stuff like that. A dedicated exercise routine is nice, but even accumulated physical activity helps burn calories.

4. Exercise is an all-natural energy booster, by delivering oxygen and nutrients to your muscles. In fact, regular exercise helps your entire cardiovascular system become more efficient. When your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you'll have more energy to enjoy your life!

5. Regular exercise will help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. Doesn't exercise close to bedtime, though, or you'll be too energised to sleep. To avoid this, try exercising earlier in the day.

6. Exercise is good for your sex life. Of course regular exercise will have you looking better, but on top of that, regular exercise has been proven to lead to enhanced arousal in women, while countering the effects of erectile dysfunction in men, even as you get older.

7. Exercising is fun. You don't have to do stuff you hate to get exercise. If you don't like running or lifting weights, then don't. Take a martial arts class or go swimming instead. The key is to find an activity you enjoy, then do it regularly enough to benefit you. If you do a fun exercise, you'll be more likely to do it regularly.

Never has physical fitness been more important. With an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, coupled with an unhealthy diet, the obesity rate in the United Kingdom is growing at an alarming rate. Already, more than 30% of British children aged 5-13 are obese. If that's not a good enough reason to start exercising and hit the gym, I don't know what is.
