Through the process of hypnotic induction, you reach a mental state or set of attitudes. Hypnosis basically consists of a sequence of suggestions and instructions. There are two ways to give hypnotic suggestions. The first one is given by a hypnotist in the presence of the subject. The client himself administers the second one. Hypnosis can be used for the purpose of treatment, and it is called hypnotherapy.

'Neuro-hypnotism' is the term from which the words 'hypnosis' and 'hypnotism' are coined. It is formulated by a Scottish surgeon and Physician in 1841. Some people have the misunderstanding that it is the form of unconsciousness similar to sleep. But it is a wakeful state of concentrated attention. In this process, creative faculties are stimulated and a type of concentrated feeling, thinking and understanding is developed.

Four major wave patterns are there. These are the frequency of electrical impulses firing from the brain identified through the data collected by EEGs. The Beta state that is alert and working, the Alpha, which is relaxed and reflecting, the Theta, the drowsy state and the Delta which is a state of sleeping, dreaming or deep sleep are the four wave patterns. As per the physiological definition of hypnosis, it is the Alpha state where the brainwave level necessary to work on issues like treatment of addictions, eradicating phobias, shedding extra calories etc exists. Normally it is associated with closing one's eyes, day dreaming and relaxing.

The therapeutic change takes place through the Theta state. It is connected with hypnosis for surgery, numbing sensation of pain, decreasing sensitivity to pain etc. You would be surprised to know that meditating, reading and watching television are also forms of hypnosis. Many hypnotists raise the claim that they can hypnotize anyone. They strongly oppose the argument that people with strong will cannot be hypnotized. The base of their argument is that people who are most intelligent are most creative also and they would respond nicely to hypnotic suggestions and the language used by the hypnotist.

You can find a strong connection between effortlessness in putting someone in a hypnotic trance and his level of suggestibility. While in a trance, there is a possibility that a person may accept even such statements he would reject otherwise. Hypnosis is put to wide use in the field of education, medicine, treatment of skin, entertainment etc.
