A vasectomy surgery is usually completed in two to three hours; it is a fairly simple and straight forward procedure which is conducted under local anesthesia with one or no sutures. The procedure is absolutely painless but if you harbor a morbid fear of surgical procedures, you can always choose to go for general anesthesia. However, you will need to stay in the hospital while the effect of general anesthesia wears off.. You may feel a slight amount of discomfort and some pain once the sedation wears off; however, your surgeon will prescribe analgesics to take care of the pain. Your surgeon will also tell you to use ice packs on the scortum to control the inflammation and discomfort. Generally medication such a Mortrin, Tylenol or Advil is enough to minimize the pain.
It is normal to see some amount of swelling, discoloration and bruising on the scortum and the surrounding areas and you do not need to consult the doctor for them. However, if these symptoms last for more than a week; they may present a cause for concern and should be brought to the surgeon's attention. At the same time, if you feel unusual pricking or throbbing pain; it may be a sign of infection and you should consult the doctor immediately if you feel intense discomfort. Here may also be some amount of bloody discharge from the area where the incision was made and there is nothing to be alarmed about.
Your doctor will hand you a list of instruction for post operative recovery and it is imperative that you follow them diligently. The normal healing period is about four weeks after which you can go right back to the regular routines of your normal life. For the first week, it is best to spend most of your time in bed or in a recliner. It is also essential to not stress yourself physically in the recovery phase; so if you generally indulge in strenuous sporting or fitness activities, you should refrain from them for four weeks. The doctor will also ask you to avoid sex; particularly ejaculation for these four weeks. The guidelines in your post operative care instructions list will look something like this:
* Take bed rest for at least 24 hours following the vasectomy reversal surgery
* You can take a shower 48 hours after the surgery but you cannot use a swimming pool or even a bath tub for a week
* You can return to work after a few days; however, you need to ensure that you do not take on any strenuous activities or physical activity at least for two weeks after the surgery
* Use ice packs for the first 48 hours to reduce the swelling in the skin of the scortum; also ice packs are very potent against pain.
* If sutures have been used to seal the incision, they will no be removed because absorbent sutures are used in vasectomy reversal procedures, so these sutures dissolve in 10 t 15 days
* If the swelling continues to increase and the scortum is larger than the size of an orange, you need to see your doctor promptly. Also increasing pain within 48 hours f the surgery calls for immediate medical intervention because it is usually a tell tale sign of infection
You will be asked to come in for a follow up consultation a week after the surgery; after four weeks, the doctor will ask you to get a semen analysis done. It is essential to refrain from ejaculation two to three days before the semen analysis after the surgery. It is important to flow this guideline to ensure consistent results. Usually, in case of a simple vaovasostomy, sperms appear in the semen in about 6 months; however, it can take longer for sperms to be observed in case of vasoepididymostomy
How well you take acre of yourself after the surgery will also have a bearing on the success of the procedure; in fact with a little bit of special attention from the family, you should be able to achieve the desired results
