Chiropractic is an alternative medicine that is currently gaining popularity not only in the United States but all over the globe. This treatment deals on care for the spinal area and the nervous system. A healthy spinal precludes a number of diseases and thus pave way to a healthy life. The physicians or doctors are called chiropractors.

These chiropractors are adequately trained to diagnose and treat patients who are suffering from health problems of the musculoskeletal system. The treatments deal with the spinal and all that is related to it. This alternative medicine is based on the principle that any misalignment in the spinal will result to interference with the nervous system. When this happens, the immune system becomes weak thus resulting to contraction of diseases. Some of the ailments addressed by chiropractic treatments are high blood pressure, heart disease, constipation, insomnia. psoriasis, scoliosis and many more.

Qualifications of a the doctor

A chiropractor before he can practice his profession must be licensed. He has to pass national and state examinations for chiropractors. For licensure most state boards recognize all or part of the 4-part test which is administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. There are some states that would require state examinations to supplement the national board test. Prior to taking the examination for licensure, he or she has to finish 2 to 4 years of undergraduate course, a completion of a 4-year chiropractic college course, and this should be taken from a duly accredited school specializing in this field.

Nature of work

Although chiropractors are concerned with the spinal area, they are also after the general health and well-being of the patient. They first examine and diagnose the problems in the spine, nervous system and other parts of the musculoskeletal system.

The kind of treatment is natural, drugless and non-surgical. It is believed that the body has the capacity to heal naturally - the body having inherent ability to recuperate. To the practitioner's point of view, a person's lifestyle greatly affects his over-all health. Thus exercise, diet, rest, environment and heredity are contributory factors to the health condition of an individual. In many cases, these physicians will also refer the patient to other health practitioners, should the said patient is diagnosed with other health problems.

Chiropractors follow the standard procedure of treating patients - health history, physical, neurological and orthopedic examination, laboratory tests, X-ray and all other routinary procedures for medical analysis. For patients found to have spinal problems, the physician will make the necessary manual adjustment of the spinal column.

The doctors, in some cases, use additional therapies. Some of them are general practitioners but there are those who specialize in sports injuries, orthopedics, neurology, internal disorders, pediatrics and nutrition.

Chiropractic as an alternative medicine has already been accepted as efficacious mode of treatment for many diseases. For cases beyond, the practicing doctors of this alternative treatment may refer the patient to relevant specialists.
