Vaginal itching is essentially irritation of the skin in the vaginal area. This is a common problem that all women experience at some time or the other. In most cases, the cause is rather benign, but sometimes there may be a more serious underlying problem such as an infection. Vaginal itching treatment depends of course on the cause, and it is therefore important to identify the cause before trying any vaginal itching remedies. It is good to begin with basic measures involving hygiene, but beyond that, it is always advisable to first identify the cause of the itching. Sometimes, itching may be caused by the products we use. Certain fabrics are too harsh for people with sensitive skin, and undergarments made of these fabrics may cause vaginal itching. Sometimes the detergent you use could also be the problem. Certain deodorants and creams may also not agree with your skin. Sometimes this may be due to an allergic reaction. Certain contraceptives can also irritate the skin in the vaginal area, causing it to prickle and itch. Menopause is known to cause dryness of the vagina, and this can lead to itching too. In addition to this, there are numerous vaginal infections, including yeast infections, which could cause vaginal itching. These are usually accompanied by other symptoms such as discharge and a foul odor.

Here are some tips on how to deal with vaginal itching:

* First of all, ensure basic hygiene. This is of utmost importance and also the best vaginal itching cures. Wash the vaginal area regularly, several times a day if necessary. It is usually better to avoid using soap too often, as this too can dry and irritate the skin. You should of course also change your undergarments regularly - this too can be done more than once a day if you feel the need. Preferably use only soft cotton undergarments.

* While hygiene is important, practices such as douching are not advisable. Douching is one of the most commonly recommended vaginal itching remedies, but it can actually induce infections, as it gets rid of good bacteria in the vagina and changes the pH balance of the vaginal skin.

* Avoid using deodorants and other similar sprays in the vaginal area. Toilet paper should also be of the plain, unscented type. Try changing your washing detergent and see if the situation improves.

* If you are overweight, try to lose weight. This would also provide some vaginal itching relief. Severely overweight people tend to accumulate sweat in areas such as the groin, which could lead to itching and infection.

If you have reached menopause, have a known medical condition such as diabetes, or if you are on antibiotics, ask your doctor whether there could be a connection between the two, and what you can do about it.
