A sports injury can be one of the most depressing occurrences in an athlete's life. When you find yourself out of practice or benched because of your injury you have to make sure that you find a way to stay in shape.

Of course, when you are not one hundred percent you should not be pushing yourself. If you are injured, make sure that you are strictly following the directions that the doctors and your trainers are giving you.

If you go against what your doctors and your trainers are telling you to do, you may end up hurting yourself more. When you injure yourself further you be out of your sport even longer and even more out of shape when you are able to start playing.

The best way to make sure you are back on the court as soon as possible is to work hard within the limitations that are given to you. You have to know your limits and work hard to make sure you are back on the court with your team as soon as possible.

One of the machines that many trainers will use to bring players back to one hundred percent is an elliptical. When you are using an elliptical you may feel that you cannot get a good workout in because of the nature of the machine.

If you are used to doing a lot of running or participating in a contact sport the elliptical can be lack the excitement or the climax of your usual workout. Although the elliptical may never be exciting you have to make sure you are trying to get in a good workout.

Talk to your trainer about finding the best way for you to keep in shape. If your injury is in your upper body the elliptical may be the best way to work your legs and your cardiovascular system without disrupting your injury on your top half.

Taking the time to get to know your body and your pain threshold is very important. When you feel the pain in your injury start to increase or you notice that it is being bothered you need to stop what you are doing immediately.

Make note of what kind of action you were doing when your injury started to hurt. As you take note of what is going on with your body you will better be able to communicate the problem you are having with your trainer.

As long as you are not having pain while you are on the machine you should train yourself to get the workout that you need. First, you want to make sure that you are mentally prepared to get a good workout from the machine.

Many athletes will step on the machine and think that there is nothing they can get out of their time when they are on the machine. If you go into your workout with this mindset you will definitely have a self-fulfilled prophecy on your hands.

Force yourself to think that you are going to get a good workout when you are on the machine. This workout needs to be something that you look forward to and that you work to get better at when you are injured.

Second, you want to make sure that you are pushing yourself when you are on the machine. It is easy to become lazy when you are injured because you feel that you are allowed to because of the injury that you are sporting.

Blaming your injury for not being able to get in a good workout is usually just a cop out. More than likely the elliptical will be able to provide you with a great opportunity to get in a good workout and you need to take advantage of this.

Third, after you step on the machine you should choose a program that you are going to work at. You will be surprised when you first start pushing yourself on the pedals because you will find that it may be harder than you previously thought it was.

When you increase the resistance or the incline on the machine you will be able to adjust the intensity of your workout. The better you get on the machine the more you should use these settings to get a good workout.

You can get very skilled at pumping your legs and moving your lower body without disturbing your upper body. Hopefully, if you can do this you will be in good enough shape to keep your spot on the team when you are healthy.
