Properly Using a Treadmill

Treadmills are a great way to get in your aerobic activity. It is important to know how to use your exercise machine the proper way before you get started.

It is one of the most popular pieces of health club exercise equipment. It is not a difficult one to use either, but many exercisers make common mistakes everyday and end up using it incorrectly.

Learning how to use the treadmill properly can help you get a safe and more effective workout than if you were to perform it incorrectly. Here is how to use one properly.

First, you should get familiar with the control panel which can be done in a few ways. You can ask for some basic information from a trainer at your gym or read the instructions on the machine console before you turn it on.

Most treadmills have the same features like preset or manual workout selections, start and stop buttons, speed and incline adjustments and body weight input. You should also know the safety features like where the emergency off switch is.

You should test this to make sure it is working in case of emergency. Typically it is a large red button in the middle of the machine console.

Also, it is good council to test out the speed and how fast it goes before you jump on it for the first time. You should stand on the treadmill with your feet on the side rails rather than the belt before you start the machine.

Then, you should select a manual program and increase the speed of the belt to about two or three mph to begin. You should always start slowly by walking on the treadmill, and it is often easier for a beginner to hold onto the handrails while placing one foot on the belt to test and follow the machine's pace.

Once you are comfortable with the pace, you can step onto the belt, let go of the handrails for a better overall workout. By holding onto the handrails for the entire workout, you decrease your results and productivity of your workout by approximately 30-50%.

Once you have a feel for how it moves, you can select a preset program in which case the machine will take you through all the phases of warm up, exercise and cool down. This is a good way for beginners to get comfortable on the machine while still getting a good workout.

Then, you can try jogging and running after you get the hang of walking on the treadmill. This can take some practice and getting used to as it will feel a little different from outdoor training.

Sometimes it may cause you to feel a bit dizzy for the first few minutes after getting off of a treadmill because of the change of surface from moving to still. So, be careful and aware of this situation.

Once you are feeling comfortable, do not hold on as this will decrease your results as it decreases your exercise intensity, makes you burn fewer calories, compromises posture and body mechanics, increases risk of muscle strain, reduces coordination and balance and reduces your ability to naturally sense and adjust your position in space. Make sure that you have mastered it without holding onto the rails before you go further.

Then, you can start increasing the incline to make the workout tougher without going any faster. Again, it is important to release the hand rails for optimal results. When you are moving on an incline, it creates a more compromised body position which naturally causes you to bend over and lean slightly forward; this is a good thing that is counteracted by holding onto rails.

When stopping a treadmill, there are a few ways to do it. First, you should decrease the speed using the control panel until the belt stops.

Another option is to hit the big red stop button which will quickly reduce the speed to an ultimate stop. In this case, you should brace yourself for the strict change.

You could also hold on and step onto the sides before you turn off the machine. Make sure you cool down properly first, by reducing your speed little by little and walking at each of those speeds.
