The need to get a crown is one of the most common tooth repair procedures in the dental world. A crown is a tooth-shaped covering that is put over a tooth.

This crown helps the tooth look normal in shape and size. It also helps the tooth perform at the normal strength.

A crown will be cemented into place over a tooth to ensure that the crown does not fall out. It should also completely cover as visible parts of the tooth.

Crowns are often used to protect weak teeth, restore a broken or severely worn tooth, and cover a tooth that houses a large filling. These dental appliances are also used to hold a dental bride in place and to cover oddly shaped or discolored teeth.

Occasionally they are also used to cover a dental implant. There are several different types of crowns available today.

The first kind is the metal crown. The most commonly used metals in crowns are gold alloys, other alloys such as Palladium, and base-metal alloys such as Nickel and Chromium.

In general, less of a tooth needs to be removed to place a metal crown rather than another type of crown. In addition, a metal crown will not wear opposing teeth down as much as other kinds of crowns.

Another benefit of the metal crown is that it is not very often that they will chip or break. The reason metal crowns are not as popular is due to the color of the crown.

The metallic color is unnatural and is not viewed as something that can enhance the beauty of a smile. However, the other benefits make metal crowns the best choice for teeth that are rarely seen.

Another type of crown is the porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns. These are basically metal crowns with a porcelain covering to make the tooth look similar in color to the other teeth.

While this crown provides the same amount of strength as a metal crown, the opposite teeth tend to face more wear. In addition, the porcelain part of the tooth tends to break and chip off.

In comparison to other crowns, these crowns look the closest to the natural tooth. However, a hint of the metal underneath can appear at the bottom as the gum line recedes.

Another type of crown is the all-resin dental crowns. These crowns are less expensive than the metal and porcelain fused to metal crown.

However, the lower price is shown in how quickly they become worn and break. These crowns need to be replaced much more often than the other kinds of crowns.

The best kind of crown for achieving a natural color is a pure ceramic or porcelain crown. These crowns are also popular among people who are allergic to metal.

The drawback to these kinds of crowns is that they are not very strong when compared to metal or porcelain fused to metal crowns.

In addition, they provide the most wear to the opposite teeth in comparison to the other types of crowns. However, their natural color makes them very popular for the front teeth.

There is another division between types of crowns. This division is between temporary and permanent.

Temporary crowns are generally made right in the dentist's office. Permanent crowns are generally made in a dental laboratory.

Temporary crowns are made out of a lesser material, such as acrylic or stainless steel. These are usually put in place while you are waiting for a real crown to arrive from the dental laboratory.

When you get a temporary dental crown, you should take a few extra precautions to take care of it because it is not as strong as the permanent crown will be. First of all, you will want to be careful to avoid sticky and chewy foods like gum and caramel.

These sticky foods could get stuck on your crown and when you try to remove them, you could pull off your crown. In addition, you will want to try to use the side of your mouth with the crown as little as possible.

This will put less strain on the crown and will help ensure it does not break until it is replaced with a more permanent crown. Another precaution that you will want to take is to avoid chewing on hard foods.

If you need to eat a hard food, try to chop it into small enough pieces that minimal chewing takes places. Hard foods could break or shift the crown.

Likewise, when you are flossing, you will want to slide the floss out of your teeth instead of lifting it out. When you lift out the floss, you could catch the crown and lift it off as well.
