A dental crown is usually used to repair a tooth, cover stains that are impossible to whiten, to cover implants or keep the bridge in place. It covers and resembles the tooth very well and is also known as a cap. They can be permanent or temporary. The later is used until a permanent, personalized one is put in its place. It strenghtens the tooth because of the material it is made of, like ceramic, porcelain or metal.

Your dentist is the one that will recommend which one to choose, according to your needs. He will make a mold of your teeth and fit a crown accordingly. The temporary crown is kept in place by a special, undurable cement that will make it easier for your doctor to remove the cap when he puts your ready permanent crown. Now, with all the advanced technology and by help of a computer, it is possible for the dentist to put your permanent dental crown in just one visit.

A dental crown is the best choice if you have badly decayed teeth or they have been damaged, in which case a metal crown is pereferred. It is aestethically questionable but the material is very resistant and is less invasive on your natural teeth. If you are concerned about you dental crown being more aesthetically pleasing, depending on the tooth you want to repair, then a porcelain crown is best suited for you. It is a lot more durable than the ceramic one, although not as undistinct.

Last but not least, many people opt for the ceramic dental crown because it has the ability to blend in with the rest of the teeth. The downside is that they are not as sturdy as the others, being suitable for front teeth and less used for back teeth that will have to resist chewing and forceful biting.

Some people prefer porcelain veneers instead of dental crowns. This is the case of those concernced mainly with aesthetics and who usually have healthy teeth. It depends on the damage of the teeth if you are fitted for caps or veneers.
