When you step on an elliptical machine for the first time, you may feel that it is pretty self-explanatory. More than likely you will be able to figure out how to get your legs moving and start your workout.

After a while of working out on one of these machines, you may start to feel that your workout has become tedious and boring. The apparent simplicity of this machine can be its greatest plus and its biggest downfall.

The more that you understand about what you are trying to accomplish the better off you will be when you are trying to spruce up your workout. An elliptical can actually be a very diverse machine.

Although you will be moving your feet in the same pattern for the majority of the time, you can find other ways to change your workout. A great way to do this is by using the programs built into the machine.

Instead of just hopping on and pedaling while you are on the machine, you can select a program that has already been built into the machine. These programs will have different names and will give you different types of workouts.

Throughout the program you will notice that the intensity of the resistance will change. You will have different periods of time with different levels of resistance to ensure you are getting an adequate workout.

When you are trying to get a workout that is just beneficial for your heart, the cardio option or the heart rate option will be your best program. This program will keep your resistance very high throughout your workout.

This means that your heart will be able to stay in your target heart rate zone for a good amount of time. You will not have to deal with working up your heart rate multiple times throughout your workout.

Other people enjoy the fat burning programs while some people enjoy the strength training programs. After you have found your favorite program start working on making the workout easier for your body.

When you feel that the program is just not intense enough anymore for you, you can add some alterations. A great alteration is hand weights or ankle weights that you can attach to yourself.

Throughout the workout you will be able to feel your arms and your legs working harder than they did before. When you are using weights you will be able to participate in strength training as well as cardio training.

Another great way to change your workout is to make sure you are using the handlebars that are built into the machine. On some of the newer machines you are able to change the resistance of your handlebars.

This will enable you to get an upper body workout while you are working your legs. There are not many machines that can provide an upper body workout and a lower body workout.

Taking the time to adjust your workout so you are able to get the most from it can be difficult at first. You may start to feel some discomfort and you may even feel that the workout is too hard for you to complete.

Pushing through some of the harder workouts will enable you to see results that you would not be able to see otherwise. Exercising will put you into uncomfortable situations; you have to embrace this truth before you being your workout regiment.

To ensure that you continue to see results and you are healthy you have to make sure you are eating well as well as working out on the elliptical. Just hoping on the exercise machine everyday is not going to be enough.

You should incorporate a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner into your day. You should also make sure that you are snacking on hungry foods throughout the day to avoid the feeling of ravenous hunger.

Instead, you want to treat food as a way to refuel your body. When you are refueling your body you do not have to give yourself an excessive amount of food or food that is not going to serve some purpose.

Your food should be a tool to ensure your body has the energy to keep on going and accomplish everything that you need to accomplish. Being gluttonous in your eating habits will only inhibit the results you are looking to see from exercise.

You can make your elliptical workout intense and worthwhile if you take the time to do so.
