Your smile is very important in how you are perceived by those around you. When you smile you want to be proud of your pearly whites and comfortable with your smile so that others will feel at ease with you.

To be proud of your smile you have to make sure that you are taking care of it properly. There are many people that neglect their smile because they do not understand how important their smile is.

Not only will your smile be important aesthetically but it will also be an important part of your health, as you grow old. There are a lot of elderly people that suffer from gum disease or even cancer of the mouth.

Although here are some cases in which these conditions cannot be prevented the majority of the people diagnosed could have avoided the diagnosis. You should make sure that you start taking care of your smile now so you do not lose it when you grow old.

First, you want to make sure that you are taking the time to brush your teeth correctly. Almost all Americans are taught how to brush their teeth at a very young age and understand that they should be brushing every morning and every night.

Although you may have been brushing your teeth your whole life, you have to make sure that you are brushing your teeth correctly. You should not be using an old toothbrush that is frayed on the ends.

When you use an old toothbrush you may be doing more damage to your gums than help. Make sure that you are replacing your toothbrush on a consistent basis so that you are not cutting up your gums when you brush.

The toothpaste that you are using will also make a difference on the quality of your brush. You should be buying toothpaste that not only tastes good but also has the proper chemicals included to make sure you are getting your teeth cleaned.

After you have gotten into the habit of getting a new toothbrush and buying the proper toothpaste you want to make sure that you are moving the toothbrush properly. Pressing down too hard on your teeth can cause some painful damage.

You will want to move the brush in the circular motion and press lightly on your teeth. This is the best way to get all of the food, germs, plaque and sugars off that have built up on your teeth throughout the day.

When you have an established habit of brushing you should also make sure that you get into the habit of flossing. Many health care professionals would argue that flossing is actually more important than brushing for your oral health.

If you have not been in the habit of flossing you are going to have to give your teeth some time to get used to the feeling. At first, your teeth may start to bleed and you may feel some discomfort when you are flossing.

You should never saw the floss between your teeth. Instead you want to make sure that you are pressing the floss gently between your teeth so you can remove any of the plaque that has built up throughout the day.

After your oral hygiene has become important in your life you should then make sure that you take the time to fix any cosmetic problems with your teeth. When you are trying to fix your smile you may need braces or some other type of cosmetic work done.

Once you have taken the time to learn how you are going to take care of your smile you have to make sure that you protect it. When you are playing sports or participating in physical activity you have to take the time to protect your smile.

At first you may feel very frustrated or even dumb when you put a retainer on or a mouth guard on to play sports. Although other people on the field or the court may not be protecting their smile you have to make sure that you are protecting yours.

You have to understand that any damage done to your mouth may take a lot of time to fix and to heal. When you have problems with your mouth you are going to have to be out of commission for some time.

It is possible to preserve your smile if you are smart about taking care of it. Make taking care of your mouth a habit that you take part in everyday.
