Children aged 3 years up to 12 years are prone to lice in the scalp or hair. Because lice is contagious, it is not impossible for your kid to get head-lice from a classmate, from a playmate, etc, thus, getting rid of lice is something that you should know. Treating head lice can be done through traditional treatment methods e.g. using lice killing shampoo and through alternative methods e.g. using home remedies.

Conventional Hair Lice Treatments

Most traditional head-lice treatments are composed of harmful chemicals, to be specific, the ones found in pesticides, after all, hair-lice are considered as pests/parasites. There are lotions and creams that you can apply on your child's scalp and hair, mostly ones that may be purchased over the counter, or with a doctor's prescription.

Most of those have the ingredient called 'permethrin', which can be very effective in getting rid of lice, however, prolonged use can bring about serious side effects. You can also consider using a lice killing shampoo for treating head lice, but, that can damage your daughter's or son's hair and scalp, thus, you have to purchase one that's mild on the scalp/hair, yet effective enough in killing lice.

Alternative Hair Lice Treatments

There are also alternative treatments for head-lice that are natural and safe to use. A lot of people, in fact, prefer utilizing natural treatments over traditional ones that contain very harsh and poisonous chemicals. One alternative remedy that you should try if you have the aim of getting rid of lice on your child's head is to add some tea tree oil in your kid's shampoo, then, use it daily to kill those lice.

Treating head lice alternatively may also be done by applying mayonnaise all over the scalp and hair, letting it stay overnight by covering the head with a shower cap, as mayonnaise is believed to be an effective substance that suffocates lice and kills them just like lice killing shampoo.

One of the safest hair lice treatments, of course, is to manually remove those lice and nits from your kid's hair/scalp, then, squish the life out of those hair-lice. Getting rid of lice this way takes more time and effort, though, a good eyesight, and patience, so if you have time in your hands, consider the manual removal of lice.

It is up to you whether you want treating head lice to be done traditionally or alternatively. It is a good idea to try both and stick to the ones which truly work, are cost effective, and are safe to use.
