The hour has come. It is time for your teeth to be checked again. Visiting the dentist never tends to rank highly on people's lists of favorite things to do. Having somebody's hands in your mouth poking you with sharp metal objects is not exactly a pleasant experience. I am sure we have all felt those agonizing seconds tick away as we wait for the dentist to tell us the status of our teeth. Are there cavities? Will you be having to arrange an appointment with the drill? Even people with great dental hygiene have suffered the excruciating news that they have cavities. I am not sure which is worse. Is it the drill? Or is it smiling like a circus act when you get out of there because of the Novocaine numbing your gums and cheeks. That is a tough call. The point is that we all want to avoid having cavities. How can we prevent them? It seems even when we floss or brush, cavities can come our way.

A cavity is a hole starting to form in the enamel of your tooth. Initially they do not cause any pain, but as the decay expands deeper into the tooth cavities can expose nerve endings and ultimately destroy the tooth. This is the reason it is so important to have them filled and be checked-up by a dentist. A lot of bacteria grows in our mouths. This bacteria feasts upon left over food particles on or in our teeth. As these bacterias process particles, they leave behind acid. This acid is what starts to break down the enamel. Our saliva is a natural combatant to this acid left by bacteria. Saliva provides minerals to and strengthens enamel. This is our first line of defense against cavities. The longer the intervals between meals, the more time our saliva has to fight against bacteria and acid. If we are frequently eating snacks or drinking soda pop, this cuts down the amount of time between meals our saliva has to fight acid. People with frequent eating habits are more prone to cavities.

Good dental hygiene is essential to maintaining healthy teeth. If possible, brush after every meal. This will neutralize bacteria growth and acid build up. Remember to floss at least once a day. Without flossing we are forgetting to clean a large amount of area unreachable to brushing. Brush for two to three minutes at a time. This is how long it takes to brush all teeth surfaces properly. Drink water with fluoride, such as tap water. If the water you drink lacks minerals, seek toothpaste with adequate amounts of fluoride. Fluoride bonds with your tooth enamel and strengthens them.
