Step 1 - Start by asking a trusted friend or family member to help assist in transporting you to and from the surgery. Post operation, patients will be unable to operate a motor vehicle due to the effects of anesthesia. Having someone to drive you, ensures that you'll arrive home safely.

Step 2 - In addition, you may want to secure someone to stay with you during the initial 48 hours of recovery. This person must be willing to essentially wait on you with food and beverage, while making certain any medications are taken on time.

Step 3 - Make sure your head stays elevated through a stack of pillows or a recliner. This tactic helps to reduce swelling through increased blood flow.

Step 4 - Be prepared to experience a fair amount of pain and discomfort due to swelling and numbness during the first couple days. Be aware that these effects are a normal part of the healing process, but take note of any sudden changes in your overall condition.

Step 5 - Though you may not be hungry, make sure to eat something prior to taking any pain medication, as you may become nauseous otherwise. In addition, you will want to drink large amounts of fluids to help reduce the swelling.

Step 6 - Take it easy and avoid taking part in any strenuous activities including heavy lifting or exercise throughout the first couple weeks. Kick back as much as you can and catch up on your movie list.

Step 7 - Be sure to consult your doctor prior to taking any medications that have not been prescribed. The use of medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and various other types can act to thin the blood, posing a health risk during the initial recovery.

Step 8 - While you may be tempted to remove your bandages, do not do so. Be sure your bandages remain dry until your physician states that it is alright to bathe with them. They should be removed within the first couple of weeks anyway.

Step 9 - Show up at each and every appointment scheduled with your surgeon. Each appointment is made in order to ensure that there are no complications post operation. In addition, your doctor will be the one to remove your bandages.
