Over time, age along with the effects of sun exposure create wrinkles in the facial skin, and neck. These combined with folds and deposits of fat around the jaws and jowls can cause some people to be self conscious about their appearance and seek ways of rectifying the situation. While a facelift is unable to halt the process of aging, it can help to improve the overall appearance of the face, effectively causing patients to look much younger.

The goal of the procedure is to make patients appear younger through the techniques outlined above. Patients should be able to feel confident in looking great for their age, due to a natural appearance, avoiding the tight skin look sometimes associated with the procedure. The results can be grand in patients who have good skin tone, elasticity, and stretches easily.

The facial structure is made from layers of muscle, bone, skin, and fatty tissues. As we age, the muscles in the face begin to lose their tone and start to slack or sag. The fat located around the face will start to look droopy and wrinkles will form due to the distribution of these fatty tissues. Cells are not renewed quite as quickly as they once were, and thus, the skin ends up loosing its youthful glow and elasticity.

Overall, this procedure is effective in improving areas that sag in the face, or that may have lost their tone. However, it is important to note that a facelift is not always effective in curing each patient of wrinkles completely. Patients who have wrinkles on the upper and lower lips or forehead will generally not see much difference in these areas.

This treatment is generally performed under general anesthesia and takes roughly two to five hours, start to finish. Patients undergoing the procedure are typically advised to stay a night in the hospital for observation. The surgery itself consists of a series of incisions made inside the hairline toward the temple, extending around the backside of the ear, back to the hairline. The face is then reshaped before the skin it placed back over the face. Excess skin and fat is removed and the face is then sutured shut.

In order to find out more about this exciting procedure, the best place to begin is by contacting a local board certified plastic surgeon that specializes in facial procedures.
