Rhinoplasty Complexities: Why So Many Revisions?

Rhinoplasty is often considered one of the most difficult cosmetic surgery procedures to perform, even by some of the top surgeons in the field. Surgical revisions due to complications and dissatisfaction run particularly high for nose jobs.

The reasons why this procedure can be so complicated is actually as plain as the nose on your face. Although the surgery can be challenging for both the patient and surgeon, this shouldn't necessarily be a deterrent. There are still a greater number of success stories than there are revisions and displeased patients.

Take close notice of people's noses one day. You'll realize that there is a large variety of shapes, sizes, and angles possible. You may even find that larger, humped, or upturned noses are even attractive on certain individuals. The goal of rhinoplasty isn't to create just a smaller or straighter nose, but rather one that suits your face and is in harmony with your other features.

If you have a strong face, you'll want a one that blends in rather than one that is "overdone." The best rhinoplasty results should look natural and balanced, enhancing individual beauty. One size does not suit all, which is just the start of this procedure's complexities.

Unrealistic expectations is another reason that rhinoplasty is considered a difficult procedure. The preexisting structure of the nose can restrict what changes are possible. Thick skin, a bulbous tip, and a deviated septum can all cause challenges, limiting what cosmetic alterations are possible.

Patients who undergo very noticeable changes are sometimes shocked by their new appearance, so much so that it takes them many months to become accustomed to the look. For these reasons, surgeons find the procedure more difficult than those with high satisfaction rates such as breast augmentation.

Surprisingly, the it can take up to a year or even longer to fully heal following surgery. While this doesn't mean that it will magically shape shift in the blink of an eye, if you compare photos taken at different points after surgery, you will notice subtle changes as the swelling slows and scar tissue develops.

For this reason, patient dissatisfaction immediately following surgery is high. The nose may appear larger than expected, lopsided, or more misshapen than pre-surgery. It is recommended that patients wait at least six months before entertaining a revision so the nose can take it's more permanent shape. Surgeons may also perform simple in-office alterations in follow-up consultations to achieve the best results.

While you can't guarantee satisfaction after any cosmetic procedure, having realistic expectations, choosing a qualified surgeon, and understanding the procedure can help you make an informed decision.

It's important to discuss your options carefully with your surgeon and accept that a future revision may have to be a possibility to correct potential problems. Although difficult to perform, rhinoplasty can also greatly increase facial attractiveness and confidence. It's these benefits that make many patients think the risks are greatly worth the potential rewards.
