This increase is quite vast considering that most patients pay for treatments out of pocket. In addition, it is no longer only women who are going under the knife. Men account for a large portion in the overall amount of procedures, heading into the surgical suite over 150,000 times per year. With the topic taking over news stands and dinner tables across the world, it's important to know a little bit about the conversation taking place. In this article, we will outline a few of the different types of procedures available.

Liposuction

This procedure is one in which excess fat is removed from various points in the body, providing patients with a more appealing body contour. In general, liposuction is performed in two different ways:

Tumescent - This is the most common type. The procedure is performed by injecting a saline solution into the treatment area for fluid retention purposes, which is then suctioned out with the body fat through an instrument called a cannula.

Ultrasonic - In this procedure, the cannula is used to melt the excess fat using ultrasonic technology. The fat is then suctioned out. The fact that the fat has been liquefied makes the procedure easier to perform, however the procedure comes with added risks and complications due to the methods used.

Breast Augmentation

This is a broad procedure, including many different types of treatments. Breast augmentation includes everything from implants, to breast lifts, reductions, and asymmetrical procedures. As such, there are a variety of patients who choose this type of procedure.

Blepharoplasty

This procedure deals with the reshaping of eye lids and can be performed for cosmetic or medical reasons. Patients who have excess skin around the eyes may have impaired vision and choose a blepharoplasty to help improve their eyesight. In addition, patient who are dissatisfied with the appearance of puffiness or wrinkles around the eyes might benefit from the procedure as well.

During the procedure, the puffy pads above or underneath the eyes are removed in order to create a more youthful appearance.

Abdominoplasty

Often referred to as a tummy tuck, this procedure involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdominal region, while tightening the remaining skin and muscles.

Common patients for this treatment are women who have recently finished pregnancy, or who have lost a considerable amount of weight, and have excess skin they wish to have removed. The treatment is not a substitute for weight loss, but rather a means by which to remove the after effects of it.
