Oral irrigators are devices that are used to remove food debris from the spaces between teeth. They are also used to clean braces, dental implants, and dental bridge work.

Many different types and brand of oral irrigators have emerged on the market over the last twenty years. Although these models vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, they are all basically built around the same, simple principle of a water jet channeled through a specific type of tip. Different tips are used for different types of dental cleaning.

The majority of people prefer to use a powered stream of water to remove the bacteria that cause plaque, tooth decay, tartar, and gum disease. Others prefer to use these devices because they make it so easy to clean cosmetic dental improvements like orthodontics, bridges, and implants.

Then again too, there are those who use oral irrigators to control gum disease. The action of the water is a powerful force in removing plaque and bacteria around the gums.

In any event, regardless of a person's reason for using an irrigator, there is a correct way to use the device that ensures the best chance of success.

To begin with, the reservoir of the oral irrigator should be filled with room temperature tap water. All instructions from the manufacturer should be followed when filling.

In some cases, dentists will recommend something other than water. The most common substitute is a mixture of salt and water.

People can also use antiseptic mouthwash in oral irrigators. This helps to kill the bacteria that cause plaque gum disease and tooth decay.

The most important thing is to select a tip specifically designed for a particular condition, or a particular type of dental cleaning. A regular tip should be positioned at a 90-degree angle to the gumline. In fact, it should almost touch the teeth without actually touching them.

Some tips are intended to rinse below the gumline, and should be placed against the tooth at a 45-degree angle. The tip should be moved into the tiny groove between the teeth and gums.

Dentists recommend setting the pressure on the oral irrigator at the lowest possible setting before turning it on. The mouth should be closed slightly to allow the liquid to flow out during use.

The irrigator tip should be moved along the gum line. The person should pause for a few seconds at the spaces between teeth when rinsing below the gumline. He or she should make certain that they reach into the gum groove as you go. All of the teeth should be irrigated, especially teeth in the back of the mouth.

Patients should call their dentist if they have any questions about how to find an oral irrigator that is right for them. We are happy to recommend the best products, and we will also offer tips on usage that are not covered in the owner's manual of the device.

Our mission in doing all this is simple: we are here to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy.
