Every time we go to the dentist, we see the dental hygienist as well. Sometimes the hygienist performs a dental checkup, and then sends us on our way to the dentist. At other times, the hygienist actually performs advanced dental procedures that are vital to your oral health.

While there is a distinct difference between a dentist and a hygienist, the hygienist is nonetheless an invaluable professional whose services and knowledge are indispensible to both general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.

A registered dental hygienist is extensively trained and licensed in oral health services. He or she provides you with therapy, clinical treatment, and educational services.

A dental hygienist must undergo training that is both thorough and intense. He or she takes coursework in specialized chemistry, human physiology, nutrition, anatomy, microbiology, oral pathology, radiology, and pharmacology.

Training also involves taking courses in advanced dental procedures and hygiene strategies.

A series of very rigorous tests must then be passed before the dental hygienist graduates. After that, he or she must also complete hundreds of clock hours of supervised instruction in clinical practice.

On a day to day basis, there are scores of activities that require the assistance of these highly trained experts.

Teeth examination is top on the priority list. Hygienists carefully examine your teeth when you come in. They look for tooth decay, and they check the color and constitution of your teeth. They make note of their findings and report them to the dentist.

They also closely examine gums and look for evidence of periodontal disease. If periodontal disease is discovered, they determine its severity and pass on that information to the dentist as well.

While performing an oral examination, the dental hygienist will check for oral cancer and other maladies that attack the mouth. They take dental x-rays in order to help the dentist diagnose any problems with teeth, roots, and jawbones.

Dental hygienists use a variety of specialized instruments and methods that allow them to thoroughly clean all surfaces of your teeth. Such tools help them to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from above and below the gumline with a minimum of discomfort to the patient.

Every hygienist participates in the specialized treatment of gum disease. They perform procedures like scaling and root planing, and they apply fluoride gels and other treatments.

Much of your dental health depends on what you do for yourself at home. The hygienist can teach you how to effectively care for your teeth and gums and give you the best chance of preventing tooth decay and Periodontitis. He or she also shows you how to choose the proper toothbrush and dental floss.

If you want to use an electric toothbrush or oral irrigator, you can obtain this information from them as well

Your dental hygienist will also show you the relationship between a dental nutrition and dental health. Suggestions are given about which foods to select and which to avoid.

Always keep in mind that your hygienist is an expert educational resource who will assist both you and your family in keeping your smile healthy for a lifetime.
