Breast enlargement, also known as a mammoplasty, involves the surgical placement of implants underneath a women's breast tissue. These implants are made up of either silicone or saline materials encased in a silicone shell. While both materials have their specific benefits, patients are able to choose which one suits their needs best.

During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision in a discreet place underneath the breast, through the belly button, in the armpit, or around the areola. The implant is placed through the incision hole and under the tissues or muscles in the chest. Once the implant has been properly placed, it is then adjusted in order to obtain the desired aesthetic effect. The incision is then stitched shut.

There are many different sizing options for patients to consider. Size can be increased by as little as one cup ,to multiple sizes. In addition, some surgeries are performed to correct uniformity in size and shape, as some women tend to have breasts that are noticeably different in this aspects. An addition procedure performed in conjunction with enlargement includes the lift, in which the bust is raised and tightened.

Post surgery, the treatment area is wrapped in gauze and a support bra or bandage is placed over the bust line. Stitches generally remain for the first week or so, and soreness is quite common, lasting roughly the same amount of time. Bruising and swelling should also be expected, and can also last for a period of weeks during the recovery. Patients who wear a support bra during the initial recovery period tend to see a faster recovery time in regard to swelling and discomfort.

In some cases, an overnight stay at the hospital may be recommended for patients recovering from the procedure. In other cases, it is recommended that patients secure a trusted friend or family member who is able to care for them during the first 24 to 48 hours. Most patients are able to return to work within several days, provided strenuous activities are avoided.

To find out more about this exciting procedure, the first step is finding a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in this type of operation. He or she will best be able to make recommendations based on your specific wants and circumstances, while providing instruction, and information pertaining to your potential results.
