You hear people talking about having high blood pressure all the time and how much it can affect your health. But rarely do you hear about someone who has low blood pressure and any problems that accompany it.
What are some symptoms that you will be able to recognize? Whether you are pregnant or not, you might suffer from fainting or dizziness.
These are not very serious and definitely not as serious as having high blood pressure or hypertension. But it can be serious when it happens unexpectedly.
You may be holding your baby and all of a sudden faint and fall to the floor. The baby falls and you might get hurt as well on your way down.
So there are risks involved when you have low blood pressure or hypo-tension. Falling could greatly hurt you or your baby.
But it is not nearly as common in pregnant women as hypertension is. What are some of the causes of this?
The most common cause if dehydration. If you do not replace the fluids in your body often enough, then it causes the blood in your body to not flow the way it should.
Heat in addition to not keeping hydrated will also help contribute to the problem. When you are pregnant, a lot of blood tends to pool down in your legs especially when you are standing for a long time without taking a break to put your feet up every once in a while.
Because of this, it makes that much more blood unavailable to your brain. So when you stand up from a sitting position, you can get dizzy and end up fainting.
If dehydration gets too severe, then you may need to go to the doctor so he or she can give you intravenous fluids. Before it gets too bad, you should make a big effort to drink a lot of water throughout the day.
Sometimes your health care provider will recommend compression stockings that help the blood circulate in your legs better. They may also tell you to eat a little bit more salt in your diet.
When you are lying down, make sure to lie on your side. Preferably your left side but you should not lay on your stomach for obvious reasons.
If you lie on your back, the baby will put too much pressure on your sciatic nerve and cause back pain. Lying on your stomach is uncomfortable and almost impossible to do without a belly cutout in your bed.
When you have to get up after sitting for a while, then sit up very slowly so that the blood has time to reach your head and you will not get dizzy. By the time you are in your third trimester, you are going to have a hard time moving anywhere fast so this will be easy to accomplish.
When you start to feel dizzy, then sit down as fast as you can. Even if you are in the middle of the aisle at the grocery store, plop down right there on the floor because you will prevent yourself from falling and hurting yourself.
The last thing you should make sure to do during your pregnancy is to exercise. Obviously you cannot push yourself too hard because you have more limitations during this time than you would otherwise.
Going on walks every night for a good twenty minutes is always a good idea and almost everyone is able to do this no matter where they live. You do not need any equipment except for a good pair of shoes and some water to keep yourself hydrated while you go out.
Come up with a routine that you can stick to and would be willing to do every day or at least five times a week so that you can enjoy all of the health benefits that accompany being active and something that will encourage you to eat a healthy diet. There have been many studies that have shown that exercising regularly will help keep your blood pressure normal and your overall health in good shape.
