Attention deficit/Hyperactive disorder is a behavioral disorder which constitutes to hyperactivity and attention seeking in children. Close to 3% to 5% of children are affected with this ailment worldwide, out of which 2% to 16% are school going children. The frequency of boys being affected by it is three times more often as compared to girls although the reason for it is still unknown. Hyperactivity disorder in children shows certain peculiar symptoms in all children affected by it. Children affected with ADHD are often irrational and have a very short attention span. ADHD in children should not however be confused with anxiety or excitement that is common in every child. Hyperactivity in children is detected over time and may take place in various circumstances. Smoking in pregnant women is one of the reasons for ADHD in children. Besides this premature delivery, underweight babies and brain injuries from birth may be other contributing factors. Some research had revealed that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children might also be inherent. ADHD might be interlinked to a host of other disorders in children namely mood disorders where the children often feel neglected, depressed and have low self esteem. Anxiety disorders also seem to stem out of ADHD, where children often fret about certain trivial issues. A vast majority of the children affected by this syndrome are under performers and slow learners in school. For some of them reading and writing is an area of concern.

Aggression is one of the very prominent attention Deficit symptoms that children would experience. It can become an obstruction in school, play area, home and social life of a child can be greatly affected. Hyperactivity disorder in children often make them fidget and squirm around. They also find it difficult to stay put at one place and want to run and play around constantly.

If the parents are doubtful that the child has ADHD, they should immediately visit a doctor. ADHD in children may not be entirely cured but can be treated effectively with medicines combined with therapy. The most common drug prescribed to control ADHD is stimulants. Stimulants activate the certain parts of the brain that may not be as dynamic in children with ADHD. Parents need to create an environment conducive for children to overcome ADHD. Children need to be rewarded for being well behaved. Activities done at specific times during the day can clearly set the parent's expectations from the child. There are a number of social networking organizations that offer help to parents and children. Parents could discuss their problems with other parents and thereby raise concerns and discuss best shared practices to raise children with ADHD.
