Many people do not understand how they are supposed to get a great workout in only using an elliptical. The idea that an elliptical is too low impact to provide a good workout is something that has become very widespread.

When you walk into your gym, instead of discounting the treadmills, you may want to give one a try. There are many different types of treadmills and many different workouts that you can accomplish while you are on a treadmill.

First, you have to make sure that you are prepared to get on the machine. The more that you know about what you are going to do when you get on the machine and what you want to accomplish the better your workout will be.

You have to make sure that you have set goals for yourself ahead of time. By the time that you set out to get a good workout you should already know what your workout is going to entail and what you are going to take from the workout when you walk away.

The best way to ensure that you are on track is to have your goal with you. When you are working out if you have your goal written down somewhere you will be better able to push through the hard parts of your workout.

Your goal should not be totally unattainable, but it has to stretch you to new limits and keep you working hard. The more focused that you are on your goal the better workout you will be able to have on the elliptical machines.

Second, you want to make sure that your muscles are stretched and warmed up to get on the machine. The better stretched and warmed up that they are the better off you will be throughout the duration of your workout.

There are a lot of people that do not understand how important it is to keep their muscles warm and stretched. When you step on the machine your body will be ready and prepared to give its all and will be far less prone to injury.

Third, you want to make sure that you are utilizing the programs that have been developed and put into the machines. The machine will be able to help you get a better workout if you allow the machine the ability to do its job.

When the machine asks for your age and for your weight you should honestly enter in the information. This will allow the machine to create and adjust your workout so that it is keeping you working hard enough but not too hard.

There should also be heart rate monitors on the machine that you are using. These heart rate monitors should be utilized throughout the duration of your workout to ensure that your body is working at the level that is necessary to see results.

When you exceed your target heart rate zone you will increase your chances of injury and if you do not hit your target heart rate zone you will not see results. When the machine asks you to take your heart rate you should make sure that you do just that.

Third, you want to make sure that you allow your body to participate in a cool down period. Your body needs time to help the muscles recover and allow the proteins and acids that have built up in your muscles time to dissipate.

The cool down period is a great time to allow your muscles a head start on the recovery process. The only way that you are ever going to be able to increase your muscle mass is by allowing your muscles the proper time to heal.

After you have done a cool down period on the machine you will want to step off and participate in another stretching session. The more that you stretch the better off your muscles will be and the quicker they will be able to heal.

Taking the time to stretch twice may feel excessive when you are first beginning but will be well worth it in the long run. Understanding the elliptical and what you need to do to get a good workout on the machine is not very difficult.

The next time that you step into your gym, give the elliptical machines a try. You may hate them but you also may find a new favorite way to get your cardiovascular workout in when you are at the gym.
