Women opt for breast augmentation or a variety of reasons. It may be a personal uncomfortableness with size due to natural formation or from surgery. Breast augmentation can change the size of uneven breasts to make them look more uniform in size or add to both to increase fullness and firmness. There are two different types of implant fillers used. One type is saline; the other is silicone. Both types of implants are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Before undergoing breast implant surgery, patients consult with a surgeon to decide which type of implant fillers to use for the procedure.

Saline

A saline implant is an individual sac filled with an isotonic watery saline solution which resembles the concentration of cells in the body. They are more firm, but less expensive than silicone implants. Some are filled during the surgery, while some are pre-filled, depending on the type used. Some can be adjusted sometime after the surgery if necessary; others cannot be changed, except to be replaced. Saline implants have a very low risk of rupture. If it does happen, however, the implant must be removed manually through surgery, although the rupture itself poses no health risk to the body. There is scarring involved, although over the years, the scars have been reduced in size and are placed in less noticeable locations. The implants are almost always placed beneath the muscle, allowing for a softer, more natural-looking appearance.

Silicone

Silicone implants are preferred by those seeking a softer feel and more natural look. Each is filled with a gel-like substance to meet the desired size and shape. They are ordered and pre-manufactured well in advance of the surgery. Unlike the early versions of implants, today's silicone implants are created with multiple layers of silicone elastomer enveloping the implant. This helps reduce the risk of rupture. In the event this occurs, the implant is surgically removed. Before having silicone breast implant surgery, verify that the surgeon is a silicone certified provider.

Size

The sizes of the implants are always determined before the breast augmentation procedures are done. This is discussed and determined together by the surgeon and patient. Factors include how much natural tissue is currently present in the breast, shape, proportion to the body frame and how much cleavage the patient would like to have. Adding implants can help them look more even and proportionate or simply larger. The most common shape is round, although teardrop-shaped implants are available.
