In order to bust out of a routine of not exercising, you first need to have the mental drive and want to become healthier. Eating poorly and not exercising for large amounts of time diminishes your health, makes you lose muscle mass and vitality, and can make you sluggish.

If you have been feeling a lack of energy, take charge and decide to start living a healthier lifestyle. The first aspect of becoming healthy is changing your regular eating habits.

Have you been gorging yourself on treats, junk food, or foods that are high in sodium and fat? Cut them out of your diet!

The best way to do this is by slowly and gradually adding smarter food choices into your daily meals. If you would usually have a bag of chips with your lunch, try switching it for carrots and low fat dressing.

For those that cannot go without dessert after dinner, try eating berries and fruit or a small piece of dark chocolate, which is high in antioxidants. By making small adjustments throughout your day, you can completely change how much energy you have and how you feel after each meal.

Another great way to start eating a more nutritious diet is to cut sugary drinks like soda and fruit juice cocktails out of your daily routine. These drinks are loaded with sugar.

Sugar gives you a high boost of energy initially, but causes your system to crash into a tired state shortly thereafter. Decreasing your intake of it and snacking with other foods like fruits and nuts will help you to feel better throughout the day.

If you find yourself having difficulty with trying to decide which foods are better for you and will help you lose weight, try visiting a dietician. A nutritionist like this will give you a plan of action to makeover your food choices.

They can also help you learn which foods are better for you and how you can integrate them into your favorite meals. If you do not tend to make very healthy food choices when at the store or eating out, you will be able to receive advice on how to do so.

Once you have created a plan of action on how to eat better, the next step is to start some kind of exercise routine. If you have been inactive or stagnant, start out slowly by taking a nightly walk for a couple of miles.

When your body starts to respond to the increased amount of exercise, you can kick it up to another level by upping the intensity of your cardio workout. Try starting out with a low impact type of cardio exercise.

A great type of fitness equipment to begin a cardiovascular workout regime on is an elliptical machine. These machines, similar to a stair-stepper, are on an incline.

You power them through the use of both your feet and hands. The machine is meant to mimic the movement one makes when walking or running, but since you are suspended, it is gentle on the knee and hip joints.

Use an elliptical machine for at least twenty minutes a day, increasing the speed and resistance as often as you feel comfortable. Exercising on one of these machines will prepare you for more intense cardio as you progress in your strength and ability to run long distance.

Another great way to get out of a rut is to join classes at a gym or your local community center. Focus on fitness classes that are both entertaining and break a sweat, like kickboxing, yoga, dance, spinning, or weight training.

As a motivation to get you to attend classes more often, invite friends to come with you or make friends that you can exercise with. Also, ask advice from your instructor on how you can get the same workouts at home.

They will be able to give you tips and tricks on how to increase your heart rate with fun exercises when you are unable to make it to class or go to the gym. Breaking away from a lack of exercise and poor diet is easy with the right amount of determination and drive to become more fit and live a healthier lifestyle.
