Whether you're looking to lose weight or simply want to tone up for the last few weeks of the summer, attending a gym is a great way to do so.

Packed full of exercising equipment to suit everyone's needs, there's also usually a range of different classes available, a swimming pool and sauna and it's important not to forget the experience and guidance from qualified trainers and instructors.

Whilst gyms may be a great way to get fit, their membership fees are sometimes a little higher than most would like.

Fortunately, there are various ways to be able to attend the gym for free and these 4 points should show you how you can get yourself a completely free gym pass.

1. Look out for their open days - one of the easiest ways to get a free gym pass is to take advantage of an open day that the gym has.

Often advertised weeks in advance, they generally allow anyone to go to the gym and try out their equipment for a full day or two, completely free of charge.

Generally speaking you'll have to agree to pass over your details to receive information from the gym on a regular basis and you will no doubt be offered a discount annual membership, but just remember that there's no need to take advantage of it if you don't want to or still can't afford to at the reduced price.

2. Check out competition websites - a popular prize on many of the major competition websites is a free gym pass to your local national gym. Ranging from giving you the opportunity to try it out for a month free of charge right through to an annual pass, there might occasionally be some restrictions in place, but for the most you can enjoy free access to the gym whenever you wish.

3. Go with a friend - although not something that is generally offered on a regular basis, a recurring promotion to get new members signed up to their gym is to offer a free gym pass to its existing members for a friend or family member to use.

Usually not having any major stipulations, these passes generally entitle the bearer to use the gym as much as they like over a certain period, which can be anywhere from one weekend to a month.

4. Ask - if you know you're actually going to sign up for a gym eventually but want to make sure that the one you're planning on going to is the most appropriate one for you, you're likely to be able to get a free gym pass by simply contacting the gym directly and asking.

Gyms might not advertise the fact that they give away free day or weekend passes, but a lot of them will be more than happy to let you use their facilities free of charge if they thought you were considering signing up for an annual membership - a year long membership is likely to cost at least 500 pounds, so using a free day or two as a lure is a common method.
