It is sometimes simple to forget about the importance of dental hygiene. At most, you brush your teeth three times a day and floss once.

The rest of the time, you are not focused on your dental health. However, the choices that you make daily can affect the long term health of your teeth and gums, which can also be very important to the overall health of your body.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to oral hygiene is to eat a good diet. Foods that are very acidic and/or sugary, like candy and fruit juice, wear down the enamel of your teeth and cause you to have plaque building and cavities.

If you want to maintain oral health and keep plaque off of teeth, steer clear of foods that have high refined sugar contents. These include candy, chocolate bars, cakes, and cookies.

If you do ingest one of these foods, make sure that the particles do not sit on your teeth for long. Take a sip of water and swish it around in your mouth to remove the food, or carry a toothbrush with you so that you can clean the sugar from your teeth.

Another way you can improve your diet and care for your mouth is to eat lots of healthy foods, like fruits and veggies. The sugars and acids in these are not ones that will harm your enamel.

In fact, these foods make your heart stronger and healthier, which can improve the condition of your gums. Instead of eating a cookie after dinner, try having an apple.

Or, when tempting with cakes and sweets, why not have a bowl of berries with a small amount of whipped cream on top. The healthier the choices you choose, the better condition your teeth will be in.

Milk and dairy products high in calcium can also improve the strength of your teeth. Calcium is a vitamin with the ability to increase the vitality of bones.

If you are unable to ingest these substances, due to food allergies like lactose intolerance, make sure to integrate calcium into your system another way. Try taking a supplement, or eating vegetables that have high levels of calcium in them.

You must also take care of your teeth by staying in line with your daily hygiene routine. Flossing is something that many people tend to miss.

However, it loosens up particles stuck between teeth that cause plaque and gets rid of bacteria that cause tooth decay and break down enamel. This should be an essential part of the daily cleaning of your teeth.

Also, do not skip brushing at least twice a day and preferably after meals. It ensures that you will maintain good teeth and gum cleanliness while also avoiding the bacteria that cause bad breath.

Make sure you are using toothpaste with fluoride in it, because it will protect enamel from bacteria. You should also make use of the many different types of mouthwashes and rinses available.

Be sure to visit the dentist often, at least twice a year. Hygienists and dentists can examine your teeth and give you advice on oral hygiene. Plus, it is important to get a thorough professional cleaning every six months in order to remove built up plaque.

Seeing a dentist to get a cleaning will save you from painful extractions and fillings, and will keep your mouth clean and healthy. It will guarantee tooth and gum health for the rest of your life.

If you have already had slight damage to your teeth, the dentist can also offer you options to improve your smile and make it more appealing. There are many options, like veneers to cover chipped or damaged teeth, or whitening regimens to get a sparkling smile.

If you are involved in sports, you are at a higher risk for damaged and chipped teeth. Always wear mouth guards or some form of dental covering to make sure that, if you are hurt, your teeth will remain protected.

Maintaining a clean and healthy smile is not only essential for cosmetic purposes, but for your overall health, as well. If you make sure dental hygiene is a priority in your life and one of the most important parts of your day, your smile will show it!
