Chiropractic is one kind of alternative medicine that relieves pain through the alignment of the spinal. As the spine is connected to the nervous system, it then connects also to other body internal organs. The kind of chiropractic treatment to be applied depends upon the type and severity of the pain, injury or condition.

There are two main types of chiropractors - the straight doctor and the mixer doctor

The straight doctor's main focus is the spinal column. All attention and energy are used for this body part. Its treatment is based on the belief that all ailments come from subluxation, a mis- alignment in the spinal column. Thus, there occurs a restriction in the motion in the spine. The straight chiropractors allege that the human body can heal by itself once the spine alignment is done. The necessary step is to relieve the nervous system of any interference.

The mixer doctor is what the name connotes - a mix of different forms of natural remedies. The alignment of the spine should be accompanied by nutritional and dietary supplements, educational advice, physical therapy and rehabilitation. These doctors make treatments of the whole body, not only the spinal. Majority of the chiropractic doctors are of this time.

There are three primary phases of care - pain relief, corrective care and maintenance-wellness care

The pain relief care is done on a patient who is suffering pain. The care will be discontinued once the pain is relieved; will resume once there is another onset of pain. The treatment is on pain scales wherein the patient will undergo treatment 3 to 4 times a week, from the time the pain is felt until the pain subsided.

Corrective care is a long term problem correction. Once injured, the spine weakens and restoration of the spinal stability will be done with chiropractic adjustment of the joints and muscles. Correction of this subluxation will be for a longer period - weeks to months.

Maintenance- care will be after the pain and corrective cares. This is done in order to prevent any injury by instituting the necessary adjustments. This care is done once to twice a month. Wellness care on the other hand is holistic healthy living. With monthly chiropractic adjustments, the doctor will prescribe massage, dietary supplements, exercise and educational advices. The wellness care is also a form of preventive medicine.

Chiropractors are of two types but most of these doctors are the mix type because aside from spinal alignment, they also prescribe supplements, diets, exercises, rehabilitation and therapy. The 3 phases of chiropractic care are pain relief, corrective and maintenance-corrective.
