Do You Really Know What You're Eating?

Whenever someone tries to get healthy, one of the first things they do is to start working out. Whether this means signing up to a gym in Manchester and working out for an hour or two after work or taking up jogging on a morning before getting ready for their daily commute, it seems obvious that the more exercise you do, the more weight you're going to lose.

And whilst this is true to a certain extent, it's important that you don't neglect the fact that alongside a regular exercise regime there's a healthy, well-balanced diet in place.

But unfortunately, this is the point where so many people fall down.

Eating healthily seems easy, right?

Cut down on your alcohol, ditch the chocolate and sweets, eat salads or sandwiches for lunch and then have a traditional, home cooked meal for dinner.

Whilst no one can doubt that this - on a very basic level - could be the basis of a good diet, it's by no means a strict plan, primarily for the fact that saying "cut down your alcohol" or "eat salads or sandwiches" are phrases that aren't specific enough to be judged on whether they're healthy or not.

For example, cutting down on your alcohol in general is recommended in all instances, especially if you're exceeding the recommended daily allowance of alcohol, which is three to four units a day for men and two to three for women.

If you're really looking to lose weight, though, you need to not only reduce the amount of alcohol you drink, but look at the type of alcohol you're drinking.

Generally speaking, beers and lagers are the alcoholic beverages that contain the highest calorie count and so you should stop drinking these if you want to lose weight.

If you do not want to give up alcohol completely, however, then switch to a clear spirit and drink it with a diet mixer. A drink such as a gin and slimline tonic could have up to 100 calories less than a pint of beer.

In terms of what you're eating, simply saying you're going to eat healthy sandwiches for lunch is a complicated phrase, as not everyone knows what healthy means.

In the true sense of the words, a healthy sandwich would be something along the lines of a wholemeal bun with some extra light mayonnaise rather than margarine or butter, some lettuce, tomato and cucumber and grilled chicken, which should be made at home.

Some people think that any sandwich will generally be healthy, however and believe that a shop bought sandwich, whilst probably a little less unhealthy, will still be better for them than, for example, a burger from a fast food shop.

Surprisingly, this isn't necessarily the case as a report in the Daily Mail on 10 July 2007 showed that some shop bought sandwiches from UK supermarkets had nearly twice as much salt in them as one of MacDonald's Big Mac burgers and over half of your recommended daily allowance of salt.
