Many people are on a diet at any given time, but people often times over complicate the process and for an active person this can set you up for failure. Making small changes is the secret to accomplishing big things. Setting large goals can sometimes be overwhelming and a challenge to reach. Make a contract with yourself each week to achieve 3 simple healthy changes and once you have accomplished these things, work on some new goals.
1. Drink more water. Most people do not drink enough water and the benefits of being properly hydrated are numerous. While many of us do consumer our share of liquids, not all liquids are created equal. Drinking 4 cups of coffee is not the same as 8 glasses of water. You should have at least 8 eight ounces glasses of liquid each day with the majority of it being water. Not only is water essential for body functions, it can help you feel full and help reduce your caloric intake.
2. Cut back on the processed carbohydrates and add fruits and vegetables. There is very little nutritional value in "white" carbs. These are things like white pasta, rice and bread. These items are high in sugar and have less natural ingredients. You do not have to cut them out completely. But you can substitute one to two servings each day with a serving of fruits or vegetables.
3. Start moving. Exercise is essential to your health and well being and it is that simple. You will find more unhealthy people that do not exercise than you will healthy people that do not exercise. You do not have to be able to run a marathon or work out for an hour on resistance machines. But pick something simple and do it. Go for a twenty minute bike ride or walk, 3 times per week. The Wii fit has become very popular and many well known personal trainers have workout DVDs available. In the beginning, what you do is not as important as just doing some type of exercise.
Losing weight does not have to be complicated. You will probably find that the more simple and basic the program the easier it will be to follow and stick with. Take small steps that are attainable and it will not be long before you are seeing the benefits of these changes. You will be well on your way to a healthier, thinner you!
