Losing weight and getting healthy is not an easy task. A lot of the time, however, people aren't too sure what it is they're doing wrong to start with and these 5 points should help show you just what you could be doing wrong and how you can change your ways.

1. Getting the bus or tube all the way to work - one of the most obvious points that comes up time and time again when looking at where people can start to lose weight is their general exercise routine. This doesn't mean you have to attend a gym in Manchester, London or anywhere else in the country, as more often than not you can incorporate basic exercises into your daily life.

Getting off the bus or tube a stop or two earlier is the perfect example. It won't make a massive amount of difference time wise, but the extra 20 or 30 minutes walking (10 or 15 on a morning and the same on an evening) will be of a massive benefit to you in terms of your health.

2. Skipping breakfast - not everyone is hungry first thing in the morning, but regardless of whether you could eat a Full English breakfast or can just about manage a piece of toast, it's important that you eat something within an hour or two of you waking up.

The reason that this is so important is that by eating as soon as you wake up, your body's metabolism will get a kick start, meaning that when you eat later on throughout the day, your metabolic rate will already be up to speed, effectively burning off any food you eat quicker.

3. Grabbing a shop bought sandwich - wherever possible, you should always take your own lunch to work for the simple fact that you know what exactly is in it, never mind the fact you could save yourself a small fortune.

If for whatever reason you can't make your own lunch, however, try and refrain from purchasing a pre-packed sandwich from a shop. A survey by Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) carried out in 2007 and reported by the Daily Mail on 10 July 2007 showed that sandwiches from some of the UK's leading supermarkets had up to 3.9g of salt - that's more than half of what an adult is recommended to consume each day.

4. Drinking beer and lager - if you want to drop a lot of weight, one of the most important points to consider would be a complete removal of alcohol from your diet. However, many people don't need to go to these measures as long as they think about what they're drinking.

Beer and lager are the two worst offender's calorie wise and so you should cut these out instantly. If you still fancy a tipple. Switch to a clear spirit and a diet mixer (such as a vodka and diet coke of gin and slimline tonic) and you'll be saving yourself a few dozen calories on every drink.

5. Keeping the carbs - using a very basic explanation, carbohydrates are the food group that help your body retain food for use later on, such as for exercise. Therefore, if you're exercising regularly, make sure you eat pasta or potatoes beforehand to give you an added boost.

If you're not working out, however, try and limit your carbs to one or two meals a day and where possible, choose a dark option, steering away from white pasta, rice or bread.
