In The Fight To Lose Weight, Is A Gym Membership Really Necessary?

There are two components to losing weight; eating healthily and working out. The first is the one that is actually relatively easy to carry out, as by removing from your diet the things that are obviously unhealthy (i.e., fatty and sugary foods such as sweets, chocolates and cakes) and limiting your alcohol intake (if not taking it out of your diet completely), you'll find you'll start to drop a few pounds straight away.

The second point, working out, however, is not as straightforward and requires a lot more thought and preparation from the person to be able to be carried out effectively.

For some people, this increased thought and preparation comes easily and naturally to them. This may be for the fact they enjoy working out and don't find it a chore or they are simply dedicated enough to know that if they don't exercise, they won't lose the amount of weight that they so desperately want to.

Other people, however, struggle to be motivated enough to go for a short walk and any form of exercise that requires for them to be working out for more than a few minutes instantly brings them out in a cold sweat.

For these people, a gym membership is arguably the way forward.

It's understandable if you don't agree with this, as it could be seen as throwing the person in at the deep end and making them do something that they aren't too keen on doing - but there is reasoning behind this.

If you're overweight and are planning on dropping a few pounds or even stones, you already have the motivation there to some degree, as you know exercise is needed to lose the weight. The problem is you tend to not act on this motivation until you absolutely need to, requiring something to get you motivated to get motivated.

And the perfect antidote to this is money.

For example, if you were handed a gym membership free of charge, no matter how self-motivated you were, you'd never feel obliged to go as the membership was free.

If you're paying for it, however, then it's a completely different story. Setup a Direct Debit so that your monthly membership fee is taken directly out of your bank account each month and you'll soon find that your attending the gym two or three times a week at least, hoping to get the most from your money.

It's a particularly simple process, but it works.

When you get to the bottom of it, if you need a gym membership or not when you're looking to lose weight it comes down to the simple fact of whether you're motivated or not. If you can motivate yourself to lose weight and work out from home, then chances are you don't need to attend a gym regularly. If you aren't this motivated - and remember, it's not necessarily a bad thing if you're not - then a gym membership could be the difference between you losing a pound or two and dropping right down to your ideal body weight.
