If you are like most young families or newlyweds, you have probably heard what a good idea keeping a food storage is, but have no idea how to begin to fund one. This is a common problem, and can be easily solved through budgeting, small sacrifices, and some common sense.

After all, while you may think you can't afford a food storage, maybe the real thing to think about is how can you afford not to have one? If any emergency or natural disaster hits, there is no telling how long it make take for you to be able to acquire food.

Having a food supply can save you, your family, and those around you, if disaster strikes. Making sacrifices now can save your life in the long run-why wait?

When we have a greater perspective of the importance of food storage it makes it easier to find the money we need. Being frugal and wise with our money are important steps in being able to afford a food storage.

Here are some great tips and ideas to help us budget our finances and households as we build up our family's food storage. The first tip to save money is to not buy new clothes just because you want them.

Repair pieces of your current wardrobe and make it last a little longer. This money could be better spent on food basics such as flour, wheat, and water.

Next, cut the amount of money you spend on fun activities and recreation by fifty percent. Do fun things which do not require money-it may take a little more time and creativity, but these activities can be even more fun and rewarding in the long run.

Often the best memories come from creativity and time. Next, make sure to pay attention to advertised specials and coupons in the grocery store and the weekly ads.

Pick up extra items when they are on sale, and store them away for later. These ads usually have at least a handful of things a week which will help you save money.

Each week when you bring home your groceries, go through each bag and ask yourself if you can do without a few items for this week, and set them aside for storage. This will help you to start even a small, simple storage that can benefit you later in the month.

Remember, you don't need to keep these items on the shelf for years. You can rotate them throughout each month, to make sure they stay fresh, and you learn how to use them.

Set aside a small amount of money each weeks to buy food staples such as pasta, baking ingredients, and paper products. It may surprise you how quickly this money will build up, and the amount of inexpensive food it will buy.

Think of it as an investments. It is just a different kind of savings!

Set goals for yourself and your family. Work your way toward a one month supply, then a three month supply, and so on-be realistic.

To help you plan for a food storage, you should follow the five principles of economic constancy, which are to live generously with others, live frugally with yourself, learn to distinguish between your needs and your wants, budget wisely, and live an honest life. Building up your food storage is a process that takes time, but if you break it up into manageable goals you can do it!

Once you have a sizable food storage, you may want to ask yourself if you will share your food storage with others in time of emergency. If this is the case, you may want to start an extra reserve that can be used to share.

While it is important to make sure you and your family will have plenty to live on, sharing with others will bless you in ways you could not even imagine. If other family members were forced to turn to you, how would you feel if you had to turn them away?

As you can see, food storage is such an important part of planning for the future, and it is never too early to start preparing for one. With just a few dollars and a few sacrifices each month, you can have a generous, healthy food storage in a short amount of time which may end up saving your life.
