It seems that the health industry is too focused on people who are overweight and has almost forgotten about folks that have a hard time just putting on a pound of extra weight. If you are a naturally thin person, you would have probably tried all sorts of ways to increase your body weight, but find it almost impossible to do so. The thing is this, have you tried to get professional advise or engage a good personal trainer to help you to increase your weight?

Genetics apart, being thin and skinny can be a result of bad eating habits, chronic diseases such as thyroid problem and is also a concern for people who want to improve their athletic abilities to be bigger, stronger, muscular and also for aesthetic effect to look fitter and healthier.

As part of the aging process, underweight people may become frail, which means they are more likely to suffer from bone density problems such as osteoporosis, arthritis and risking hip fractures from falls. Unknown to most men, being underweight may also lead to erectile dysfunction or impotency.

So what can you do to gain weight healthily? Many thin people who are desperate to gain weight resort to eating plenty of junk food to achieve their weight gain goals. Most junk foods contain calories from saturated fat and transfat which may be hazardous to your health in the long run and therefore is not the healthy answer to gaining weight. Of course you have to increase your caloric consumption to put on weight, however make sure those calories come from healthy foods.

If you need to consume fat to buck up your calorie consumption, then consume healthy fats like omega-3 essential fatty acids from food sources such as in cold water fishes like tuna and salmon. Eat good proteins like lean meats, white meats, fish, nuts, seeds and legumes to gain muscle weight and compliment that with weight resistance exercises to gain muscle mass instead of ugly and unhealthy body fat.

Underweight people may also be lacking in some nutrition from poor food quality. So supplementing your diet with good quality multi-vitamins and minerals can also help. If you are exercising regularly, then protein supplements may also be necessary to repair and feed your muscles for them to grow bigger.

Exercising correctly is another important element in weight gain. By doing the right exercises, especially weight resistant exercises, you also can get to choose where you want to put on the extra pound. Resistance training exercises such as lifting weights will help to increase your muscle size and mass and therefore increasing your overall weight.

Although aerobic exercises such as running and sprinting are good for strengthening your heart and lungs, it may cause you to burn off the calories that you have consumed and thus derail your goal for weight gain. Thus weight resistant training is the exercise for people who want to put on extra pounds.

If your result is arduously slow, then it may be about time you enlist some professional help such as personal trainers who are experienced and successful in helping thin people to gain weight.
