Down syndrome is a disease resulted from the abnormalities of the genes found on the person.

Although this disease cannot be prevented, some experts have now the ability to detect affected babies in the uterus. It will undergo a series of genetic testing to ensure the chance of detecting it as early as possible. 90 -93% of the babies being detected to have this disease are aborted depending on the parent's decision.

Most of the affected person will have a lifespan of about 25 years and been improved according to recent studies. At present it is said that affected patient can now live for about 49 years.

Affected patient most often seen to have irregular behavior. They have difficulties in their cognitive capabilities that hinder them to live like a normal person. It is very difficult for them to move normally and to communicate with people around them.

Scientific explanation about what causes a person to have this kind of abnormalities will refer to genetic irregularities. A person that is normal will have 46 chromosomes wherein 23 of these are coming from either parent.

When the chromosome exceeds up to 47, that extra 1 chromosome will affect the entire system. That's why person with this diseases have 47 chromosomes. The extra chromosome varies its effect on the affected patient.

We cannot prevent this condition and it can occur to any babies randomly. However, those mother that ages 35 and up during pregnancy has the greater risk of having a baby with this disease.

As the age of a woman goes higher, the possibilities of conceiving an affected baby will also increase just like a pregnant mother at the age of 45 has a 1 in 30 chance of having an affected baby.

Parents with a family history of this disease will also have a chance that it will occur once more in the family line. Once it is in the genes of any family member, it will continue to every generation wherein there will be chances of having baby with this disease.

Down syndrome is a mysterious disease. It cannot be prevented and cannot be totally cured. This disease will greatly affect the mental and physical capabilities of a person.

A person with this disease must not be discriminated rather they must have all the care and understanding that they deserved.
