Mining is one of the most hazardous professions not only for the miners who work in the mine, but for everyone else as well. Mining releases hundreds of thousand of tons of toxins every year into the environment. These toxins range from toxic heavy metals like Mercury, Cadmium and Selenium to volatile organic compounds that can damage the function of human organs and nervous systems to Sulphur Dioxide, a key component in Acid Rain.
Canada is one of the leading mining countries in the world and a new report by Environment Canada details the amounts of toxins released from their extensive mining operations. "The information on pollutants sheds new light on the environmental toll exacted by Canada's bid to extract oil from bitumen, showing in stark relief how many nasty substances are being laid on the northern Alberta landscape in the process - and how quickly those are growing".
In the past 4 years the amounts of pollutants released by mining operations in Canada has increased by over 26% and for some pollutants it is much higher. The companies who run these mines: Syncrude Canada Ltd., Suncor Energy Inc., Royal Dutch Shell, and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd say that they are investing over $1 Billion dollars in the next year to reduce tailing but this is not nearly enough and it is a case of to little to late. Last year, oil sands mines also produced 322 tonnes of arsenic, 651 tonnes of lead and measurable volumes of mercury, chromium, vanadium, hydrogen sulphide and Cadmium.
The companies also released huge amounts of pollutants into the air last year, including 70,658 tonnes of volatile organic compounds, which can damage the function of human organs and nervous systems. It is great that they know the quantity of the pollutants that are released but scientists say that that is only part of problem, they also need to know the concentrations of the toxins and pollutants a figure Environment Canada does not provide.
This is a huge problem not just in Canada but around the world. Mining is a huge global industry which has had very few restrictions and very little oversight in most countries, even in the US. These chemicals and toxins do not just stay in the tailing ponds, they pollute our air, water ways and water supply. They eventually end up in humans and cause many serious health problems. Much tougher environmental regulations and enforcement needs to be enacted to protect the human population from this needed but hazardous industry.
One thing we can all do to help is to remove the toxic heavy metals that have already found their way into our bodies. The most effective detoxifier of these toxic heavy metals is Kelatox EDTA suppositories. Kelatox combines the effectiveness of IV EDTA infusion with the low cost of ineffective Oral EDTA products.
