The extended use of one particular muscle or group through exercising or strength training usually increases the size of it and how much energy it is able to exert. However, this also puts a great deal of strain on the muscle, and without proper stretching habits, can damage it.

Increasing flexibility within the body is beneficial to how easily you are able to work out and participate in activities like sports. If you neglect taking care of overworked limbs and tendons of the body, you are more likely to pull them or cause injury.

You should make a goal to stretch both before and after exercising. Never stretch muscles that have not been properly warmed up.

There are a number of ways in which you can warm up your body and make it easier to stretch. One great way to do so is through the use of exercise equipment.

Start by walking at an easy pace on a treadmill for at least five minutes. If you are not feeling like you are being sufficiently prepped, increase the speed a small margin and turn you warm up into a speed walk.

You can also warm up on an elliptical machine. Be careful not to strain yourself or use too high of a resistance.

The purpose of the five to ten minutes on the equipment is to increase the mobility and flection in your muscles and prep them for more intense and strenuous exercise. Once you have been exceptionally prepared for stretching, clear an open area in your home or gym where you will be able to have full mobility and range of movement.

Start by stretching the core areas of the body. Tilt your head left and right while holding it in a place where you can feel the stretch with your opposite arm.

You can also roll your head in a circle, clockwise and then counter-clockwise, to increase elasticity in your neck and shoulder region. Be careful and gentle when rolling your head to the back, for you it is possible to injure the muscles in the front of your neck if you overwork them.

Next, roll your shoulders up and backwards. This will increase the elasticity in your upper back and support your arms when they lift and reach.

Proceed by stretching your arms, both biceps and triceps. Alternating sides, reach one arm across your body while using the other to hold it in place, feeling the gentle pull of your muscles.

Especially for those involved in cardio centered sports, like running, biking, soccer, basketball, and swimming, it is very important for you to increase the flexibility in your legs. Research the best types of leg stretches that you can perform to enhance your athletic ability, or consult your coach or physical trainer.

It is necessary for you to sufficiently increase extension in the calves, hamstrings, and quadriceps. These muscle groupings are very painful if injured, pulled, or strain, and necessary for all sports.

They are also used very frequently, and tend to be more overworked than other areas of the body. You should create a habit of exercising and stretching these muscles at least twice a day, both before and after exercise or when you first wake up and before you go to sleep.

Creating elongated muscles is beneficial to your running stride. It is also important for other athletes like dancers that need a great deal of extension in their legs and arms.

Increasing flexibility within the body is really beneficial to anyone. It makes daily activities like sitting, standing, reaching, walking, and running less stressful on your body.

For those that sit at a desk most of the day at their place of work, it increases posture, heals achy muscles, and increases the amount of time you are able to sit in one spot. Those that stay at home and take care of their children also need it to reach for things in high places and pick up, hold, and chase after their children.

It makes your body less susceptible to tendon and joint injuries. It also increases your ability to progress in strength training and cardio workouts, for your muscles are better equipped to make grander and more intense movements.

Do not let yourself downplay the importance of increasing elasticity within your body. You will notice a great difference in your workouts and throughout your life from day to day.
