We depend on our legs so much, especially if you live and do a lot of walking in and around NYC. They carry us where we need to go every day, so when something goes wrong, it can take its toll in a matter of a day or two. Furthermore, aching in the feet and legs can rapidly spread to the knees, hips, and lower back, leaving you with little strength to do the things you once enjoyed.

But without a specific disability behind the pain, you are generally expected to internalize the pain and carry on with your obligations. So how can you approach this problem to find relief with minimal disruption to your everyday routine? Well, any chronic pain issue presents a challenge, but you can take back your life and keep going.

First, try to describe what kind of pain is occurring. It is a stabbing sensation? Is it a dull, persistent ache? Or is it something else entirely? Articulate this to your spouse or other loved one or try writing it down.

Doing so may seem unnecessary, but this will help you be able to approach your doctor more directly. They will ask you to do this so they can narrow down the possibilities of what might be affecting you. When this happens, you will not be left tongue-tied.

If your doctor finds an underlying cause, they will be able to suggest the best approach for long-term healing. Do not settle for a simple prescription for painkillers and nothing else. For almost any ongoing pain issue, opiates are going to cover the problem, not fix it!

Though of course, pain pills can be helpful in helping you function during the day. But do be aware of any potential side effects, which may keep you from driving safely.

Spend some time each morning and evening carefully stretching out. I say "carefully" because if there is some underlying injury, stretching can tear muscles and vital connective tissues. Ask your doctor if it would be safe to investigate massage therapy for your specific needs.

Deep tissue massage is generally not the best option for ailing legs and hips, as the musculature tends to become very tender, so the massage can be painful or again, do some damage. A skilled massage therapist will be able to make the right recommendation for you.

It would be wise to have a consultation with an NYC chiropractic practitioner that specializes in leg and hip pain. Chiropractors provide completely natural treatments and may have more insight into the condition that is plaguing you than your general practitioner would. They will be able to come up with a more complete treatment plan for you and get you on the path to recovery.
