We all know that there are multitudinous benefits to massage therapy. I know that I receive regular deep-tissue massages to release toxins from my body and reduce inflammation throughout my body.

But the primary reason most people go for a day in the spa is to relax, regardless of other medical advantages. Unless you make your appointment at a shoddy spa with poorly trained therapists, you are bound to have a great experience, but there are some things you can do to enhance it even more.

It is wise to make at least a tentative decision about what kind of massage will be best for you this time around. If you have made it a point to receive the same type of massage treatment habitually, you may want to take this opportunity to try something different. Consult with your Manhattan massage therapist to find out what they recommend based upon your special needs.

If the indulgence of a massage is a rarity for you, then you can do some research online about what you can expect from different kinds of massages. You can also compare prices for the types at your local day spa in case you are working on a budget, as there are some that are more expensive than others. For example, hot stone therapy is generally more costly than deep-tissue.

I advise scheduling your appointment either in the midmorning, a little after breakfast, or in the evening, before you return home from a long day at work. Doing it in the morning can help you gear up for a hectic day ahead; an evening appointment can help you unwind from the tension you endured during daylight hours.

Try to avoid doing anything that may detract from the comfort of the experience. For example, you should neither overeat nor starve yourself beforehand, as both these circumstances may leave your mind elsewhere than with the positive sensations of the massage.

Know your comfort levels and communicate them clearly to your therapist before you begin. Many intake forms will ask you where your therapist should NOT touch during the course of the massage. For me, this covers my pectorals, but others may not want their buttocks or thighs touched. Let them know, as their job is to accommodate you in every way they can.

You should also indicate to them if you are sensitive to any smells, as most oils or lotions used in a spa are scented. Some rooms also have scented candles burning. If you would find this unpleasant, your therapist should know in advance.

Finally, before your appointment, perform a light stretch. Your muscles will be more supple, and your massage therapist can then concentrate on a larger number of areas on the body rather than focusing exclusively on a few spots that feel stiff and sore from lack of locomotion.
