I should have seen this coming, but was a bit blindsided when I read this article. The psychiatric industry has come up with a new disorder that should very much alarm you and it's called orthorexia nervosa. This "disorder" is characterized by a fixation with healthy eating! I understand that the Pharmaceutical Industry has been waging a war on dietary supplements and natural vitamins and minerals for decades in order to control what we consume to increase their profits.
In the past few years they have sponsored groups that publish false and negative information concerning the obvious benefits of supplements and/or natural and organics are good, but they also put out positive spin on pre-packaged foods and foods that are loaded with preservatives and additives. The processed food industry in the U.S. has done the same thing in an effort to keep consumers in the dark about the positive benefits of a healthy diet and the negative consequences of a diet steeped in processed foods. But I didn't think they would take it this far this quickly.
The term orthorexia nervosa was first coined in 1997 by a California doctor Steven Bratman. At that time there were very few cases so they were included under the catch-all label of "Ednos" - eating disorders not otherwise recognized. Since then the number of orthorexia nervosa sufferers has grown to the point where health professionals feel it should be treated separately of other Ednos. "Other eating disorders focus on quantity of food but orthorexics can be overweight or look normal. They are solely concerned with the quality of the food they put in their bodies, refining and restricting their diets according to their personal understanding of which foods are truly 'pure'."
Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soy, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out. Isn't this commonly called having a good diet? Something that we are all taught to strive for even as children! I wish I was making this up but this is serious business. Serious profits for the Pharmaceutical Industry and processed food manufacturers if they can demonize healthy eating habits and healthy foods, but also a serious threat to our health freedoms.
Information is power and we need to get this information out to EVERYONE and explain to them what this means for them and their families.
